Waste Solutions Manager

(Hybrid (on-site and remote))
 
We have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Waste Solutions Manager to join the Waste team within Operations & Utilities Division.  Reporting to the Operations & Utilities Director, the Waste Solutions Manager will be responsible for work such as:

  • Coordinating and enhancing a comprehensive solid waste collection, organics and recycling system that incorporates a variety of services including town-wide refuse residential  collection and an Eco Center that processes recycling and collects hazardous waste products;
  • Ensuring provision of a comprehensive, effective and efficient recycling program along with facilitating the sale of recyclables.  Manage the transition to the provincial Extended Producer Responsibility framework, recouping maximum returns through strategically timed sales, and coordinate billing of customers for services rendered;
  • Supporting and overseeing the provision of services to regional municipal customers;
  • Supporting regional collaboration, including representing the Town by attending monthly Foothills Regional Waste Services Commission meetings. Responsibility for policy and program development to encourage waste reduction through the promotion of recycling and to ensure that programs that are established coincide with the Town’s goals and objectives in the area of solid waste management;
  • Providing liaison with federal, provincial, local, private and community organizations in developing and implementing programs. Develop, present and monitor operating and capital budgets, accommodating for quarterly & annual variances;
  • Establishing and periodically review rates to provide services to residents.
  • Managing the operation of Town refuse and recycling programs, including compost and organics;
  • Developing and preparing requests for proposals, purchase requisitions and evaluates bidders for service contracts;
  • Negotiating agreements with external service providers and monitor and evaluate those contracts.

 
What You Bring
A combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities to qualify.  A typical way to qualify is equivalency to

  • University (bachelor) program in a Technical/Business/Scientific Field of Study and/or work. The work requires a sound understanding of the underlying theoretical principles and concepts associated with the subject area and an understanding of the relation of these to the responsibilities of the job. This specialized training is often recognized by a relevant degree in Waste Management or Environmental studies;
  • 8 or more years related work experience representing continuous learning and career progression;
  • 4 years of direct supervision and leading a team;
