About You / What We Are Looking For
The City is currently recruiting for two Regular Full Time Forest Management Technicians to join our Parks group! As part of a dynamic team in the Urban Forestry and Parks Services section of the Parks, Recreation, Culture and Facilities Department, the Forest Management Technician plays a key role in managing our Urban Forest including 2,000 acres of natural spaces. These natural spaces are highly valued by the community and are a refuge for vibrant wildlife populations and healthy runs of wild pacific salmon.
Reporting to either the Urban Forestry Services Supervisor or the Natural Areas Supervisor, the successful candidates will be responsible for technical field work, assessing individual trees and forest stands for risks, and diagnosing any tree issues and treatments. Further, you will be responsible for performing wildfire fuel assessments to reduce wildfire risk, and developing site specific forest management treatments. You will also utilize your excellent communication skills to inform the public about urban tree issues, concerns, practices and procedures, as well as issuing tree cutting permits and enforcing the Tree Management Bylaw. Finally, you will direct the work of a group of staff as well as volunteers. Minimum Qualifications
- Eligible for registration with the Association of BC Forest Professionals as a Registered Professional Forester, Registered Forest Technologist, Forester in Training or Trainee Forest Technologist.
- Certification as an Arborist with the International Society of Arboriculture as well as their International Society of Arboriculture Tree Risk Assessor Qualification.
- Bachelor’s degree or a post-secondary diploma in forestry or natural resource management is required, along with at least 3 years of related experience. An equivalent combination of training and experience may also be considered.
- Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia (with a satisfactory driving report) is required.
What We Offer:
This CUPE position has an hourly rate range of $40.73 - $48.08. The rate of pay is based on a variety of factors including qualifications, knowledge, experience and skills.
