Utility Operator 1 – Water Distribution

GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of the Utility Chief Operators or Utility Supervisor, this position assists with the operation and maintenance of the Water Distribution system.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Contributes to the success of our team and creation of our thriving community, by fostering the District of Squamish corporate values: Respect, Integrity, Connection and Progress.
- Follows the District of Squamish’s Customer Service Guidelines to ensure the Delivery of Outstanding Service.
- Operates and maintains the municipal Water Distribution system including but not limited to Chlorination systems, pumps, wells and surface intakes, reservoirs, PRV and air valves, hydrants, meters and other appurtenances.
- Repairs water mains and services as well as process pipes.
- Installs water connections to properties, as required.
- Performs flagging duties, directs or controls traffic at work sites.
- Operates municipal equipment in a safe and efficient manner according to legislation and the District of Squamish policies and procedures.
- Collects data both manually and electronically.
- Assist in wastewater collection and wastewater treatment operational duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of operation, maintenance, repair and construction of Water Distribution systems.
- Good understanding of the legislation governing Water Supply & Distribution.
- Good organizational skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks.
- Good mechanical aptitude, ability to troubleshoot mechanical issues and solve operational problems.
- Excellent interpersonal and communications skills and ability to deal with people in a professional manner.
- Ability to safely operate power hand tools, cut off saws, brush saws, and chainsaws.
- Ability to complete construction labour type work including lifting as much as 50 lbs.
- Ability to follow oral or written instructions and procedures; as well as understand relevant bylaws.
- Comprehensive and current knowledge of WorkSafe BC regulations and requirements as they relate to municipal public works.
- Ability to work safely and in compliance with the District of Squamish Health and Safety Policy, WorkSafe BC Regulations and Guidelines.
Required Training, Education and Experience:
- Grade 12
- Possession of EOCP Water Distribution Level I
- Certified TCP (Traffic Control Person)
- Training in chlorine handling
- Possession of a valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s License
- WHMIS AND
- A minimum of 2 years’ experience with a water utility.

An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Hours of Work:
Current shifts (subject to change): Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week, 10 hours per day, between the hours of 6:00am to 4:30pm. Four consecutive days with three days of rest.
Salary:
$37.02 per hour
This is a Union position within the Collective Agreement of CUPE Local 2269 and the District of Squamish.
