Water/Waste Water Operator

The District of Fort St. James is located on the south shore of Stuart Lake in central British Columbia, Fort St. James is a municipality of 1400 residents and occupies lands that have been home of the Nak'azdli Whut'en people since time immemorial. The District is seeking applications for the position of Water/Wastewater Operator
The Water/Wastewater Operator is responsible for efficient operation and maintenance of the water and wastewater infrastructure.
The Water/Wastewater Operator will report directly to the Foreman and the Director of Operations, or their delegate.
Water/Wastewater Operator Responsibilities:
- Water Quality Sampling
- Wastewater and storm effluent sampling
- Maintenance and repair to water, wastewater, and storm infrastructure
- Confined space entry
- Respond and investigate sewer backups and storm flooding
- Visual inspection of sanitary, storm manhole and valve chambers
- Restoration activites; sodding, concrete, interlock and asphalt placement
- Traffic control and signage set up
- Sanitary sewer flushing
- Supervise contractor during infrastructure repairs
- Interacting with EMS, YRPH, MOL, Council and members of the public
- Water main flushing
- Fire flow testing
- Perform utility (water, wastewater, storm) locates
- Hydrant meter service and installation
- Customer Service water off/on, water quality complaints
- Perform regulatory sampling for lead, THM’s, Nitrates and Chlorine residual
- UV system inspection
- Perform inspection of PRV, drain and air valves
- Camera inspections of wastewater and storm infrastructure
- Inspection and maintenance of lift stations
- Cross connection investigation and remediation
- Provide spill response and cleanup; interact with MOECC and SAC
- Operate heavy equipment (eg Dump truck, loader, flusher, backhoe, compressor, etc.)
- Associated responsibilities include:
- Small work crew oversight
- Maintain and complete legible records
- Investigate and assist with follow-ups to enquires from the public
- All duties must be performed in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Safe Drinking Water Act and associated regulations, District Policies, procedures and practices
- Available for Standby and shift work
- Maintain all certifications needed for compliance in the Province of British Columbia Water acts
- Perform other duties as assigned
The successful candidate must have;
- Highschool Diploma or equivalent
- Water distribution Subsystem Class 2 Wastewater Collection Class 2 and Wastewater Treatment Level 2
- Supply a current and satisfactory Criminal Record Check
- Possess a Class 5 BC Driver’s License with Air Brakes Endorsement
- Clean Drivers Abstract
- Currently hold Occupational First Aid (Level 1), CPR and AED training
- Experience in water distribution, wastewater collection systems and sanitary pump station maintenance
- Ability to prepare and keep records, read and interpret engineered drawings
- General knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, and sewer use by-laws
- Able to perform the physical demands of this position under adverse weather and site conditions, including confined space entry
- Ability to work overtime and meet the mandatory requirements of “standby” in accordance with the provisions of the CUPE Local 4951 Collective Agreement

Work hours will follow the Public Works Operational hours 8 hours/day, 40 hours/week, Monday to Friday 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. It may be requested, from time to time, that you work outside of the Public Works Operational hours. The wages will be subject to the District’s collective agreement with CUPE 4951. The hourly rate for this position is $41.83 per hour.
