Main Purpose and Function
The Planning Analyst is in the Planning, Urban Design and Sustainability department. Working within the Climate Adaptation & Equity Branch of the Sustainability Group, this position supports the advancement of the Climate Change Adaptation Strategy as well as advancing the City’s Equity Framework through our climate work. The work will help advance implementation of the Climate Change Adaptation Strategy and the City’s Equity Framework and other related City strategies
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs research, assists with policy development work, and supports communications and engagement related to climate adaptation and equity.
- Compiles, interprets and reports on technical data, academic research and best practices in order to inform and support Sustainability policy development;
- Carries out tasks and exercises decision-making related to certain day-to-day Sustainability Group initiatives with minimal supervision;
- Assists supervisors in the design, planning and execution of larger Sustainability Group projects and initiatives;
- Creates production-ready materials, including creation and delivery of presentations for senior management and other City staff;
- Writes reports including providing assistance in the writing and preparation of Council Reports;
- Conducts graphic design and analysis using desktop publishing software (Adobe Creative Suite)
- Responds to inquiries from other departments, the public, and external stakeholders;
- Organizes and prepares materials for public awareness and engagement (writing letters, bulletins, newsletters, website updates as well as preparing mailing lists and presentation materials);
- Organizes public meetings, workshops and other engagement-related events;
- Performing related work as required.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:

A university degree in urban planning, environmental science, sustainability, engineering, geography, or related field and some professional experience in a field related, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Considerable knowledge of the current literature, trends, and developments in the field of climate adaptation and urban sustainability.
- Some knowledge in local climate projections and climate adaptation priorities
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to translate complex concepts into accurate, easily readable formats.
- Demonstrated graphics and computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point), Adobe Creative Suite (illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop), or other similar graphic software
- Strong research and analysis skills
- Experience with public communications and engagement
- Ability to prioritize tasks in order to meet prescribed deadlines and function as a team player.
- Ability to present work results, conclusions and recommendations in graphic and written form.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with the public, other employees and officials.
- A personal commitment to decolonization and equity.
- Familiarity with local climate projections and climate adaptation priorities.
- Experience with government structure, such as working with multiple City Departments and outside agencies
- Experience working with diverse stakeholders and interest groups
- Knowledge of the City’s key environmental sustainability documents, including the Climate Change Adaptation Strategy and Climate Emergency Action Plan.
Where operationally appropriate and subject to change, the City of Vancouver has a Flexible Work Program. This program allows staff to work remotely 1 – 4 days a week from locations that are a daily commutable distance from their work at a City worksite. At this time this position is eligible to be part of the Flexible Work Program.
