Planner 1A (Community Sustainability)


The Development Services Department is seeking an experienced, customer service-oriented Planner with a passion for sustainability planning in rural and resort communities. If you enjoy engaging with the public and developing policies through the lens of corporate sustainability and climate resilience, this role could be for you.
 
Reporting to the Planning Supervisor, the Planner IA will manage community planning projects, facilitate public engagement, and prepare reports and recommendations for the Board of Directors. Additional responsibilities include overseeing the annual Local Government Climate Action Program (LGCAP) reporting, leading the implementation of the Climate Action Plan, and handling environmental development permits. This position is based out of our Cranbrook office.

Position Requirements:

  • An undergraduate degree in Planning
  • Eligibility for membership in the Planning Institute of BC
  • At least two years of related experience, including one year in environmental planning

 
The ideal candidate has experience in sustainability and climate resilience planning, public engagement, and facilitating dialogue with First Nations, the public, and key stakeholders. Preference may be given to candidates with additional experience or education in environmental planning, especially those familiar with climate change adaptation, greenhouse gas reduction initiatives, and managing environmentally sensitive lands.

Key Skills & Abilities:

  • Designing & implementing engagement processes utilizing in person and virtual opportunities;
  • Maintain composure and find solutions when dealing with contentious issues;
  • Application of sustainability principles for community & corporate initiatives, including measuring & reporting of greenhouse gas emissions;
  • Respond to public, Board and media inquiries in a professional manner;
  • Exceptional verbal and written presentation skills; and
  • Interpretation of bylaws, maps, legal documents, land title information and relevant legislation.

 
The RDEK offers an attractive total compensation package, which includes a competitive salary, excellent benefits, a modified workweek and learning opportunities. This is a permanent, full-time (35 hours per week) Union position with an hourly rate of $44.72, with an increase to $46.95/hour after a successful probation period.
