Majestic mountains, the rugged West Coast Trail, serene lakes, and one of the world’s tallest free-standing timber rail trestles all lie in the picturesque Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD). Located on Vancouver Island, the CVRD provides a wide range of local government services to a population of 80,000 within its 4 distinct municipalities and 9 electoral areas. Just 50 km north of Victoria and 30 km south of Nanaimo, the Cowichan Valley offers a warm climate and numerous parks, recreational, cultural, and social opportunities.

The Cowichan Valley Regional District is now accepting applications to fill two positions at our Shawnigan Lake Community Childcare Facility, within the South Cowichan Recreation Division of the Community Services Department. These regular part time positions consist of a combination of ECE Instructor (or ECE Assistant I) / Out of School Care Leader (Level II or Level I).

General Information
ECE Educator:
Reporting to the Child Care Coordinator, the ECE Instructor works with the Coordinator to develop and implement the Preschool or Group Care Programs including adhering to licensing policies and guidelines.

ECE Assistant I:
Reporting to the Child Care Coordinator and under the primary direction of the ECE Instructor, the ECE Assistant I works with the ECE Instructor to develop and implement the Preschool or Group Care programs, including adhering to licensing policies and guidelines.
Out of School Care Leader II or Out of School Care Leader I:
Reporting to the Child Care Coordinator, the Out of School Care Leader (Level II or Level I) works with the Coordinator to develop and implement the Out of School Care program, including adhering to licensing policies and guidelines.
 
Qualifications
ECE Instructor

  • Completion of a basic or post-basic Early Childhood Education program at a recognized training institution
  • Experience working in a licensed child care program
  • ECE Certificate to practice in BC

 
ECE Assistant I

  • Minimum Secondary School graduation and an Assistant Certificate from the Early Childhood Education Registry Program.
  • Experience working in a Licensed Child Care setting.
  • Early Childhood Education license to practice would be an asset.

 
ECE Instructor and ECE Assistant I

  • Child Care Licensing Approved First Aid Course
  • Licensing requirements include: must be 19 years of age, two (2) letters of reference, criminal record check
  • Class 4 Driver’s License an asset


Out of School Care Leader II or Out of School Care Leader I:

  • Minimum Secondary school graduation
  • Have completed a course, or a combination of courses, of at least 20 hours duration in child development, guidance, health and safety, or nutrition.
  • Early Childhood Education, Child and Youth Care Diploma or other related degree or working towards acquiring your diploma would be an asset
  • Working within a licensed care facility would be an asset.
  • Licensing requirements include: must be 19 years of age, two (2) letters of reference, criminal record check
  • Child Care Licensing Approved First Aid Course

 
Out of School Care Leader II

  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience working with children
  • Class 4 Driver’s License

 
Out of School Care Leader I

  • Some relevant work experience in a childcare setting

Hours of Work: Guaranteed 30 hours of work per week. Hours of operation are typically Monday through Friday with split shifts occurring between the hours of 7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Hours of work are based on operational need and may vary to accommodate facility events.

Salary: The ECE Instructor wage rate in 3 steps as per the Non-Union Staff Wage Scale, $27.47 - $28.68 - $29.90 per hour (2024 rates). The ECE Assistant I wage rate in 3 steps as per the Non-Union Staff Wage Scale, $22.75 - $23.94 - $25.18 per hour (2024 rates). The Out of School Care Leader II wage rate in 3 steps as per the Non-Union Staff Wage Scale, $22.75 - $23.94 - $25.18 per hour (2024 rates). Benefits are included as per CVRD policy. The Out of School Care Leader I wage rate in 3 steps as per the Non-Union Staff Wage Scale, $21.59 - $22.75 - $23.94 per hour (2024 rates). Benefits are included as per CVRD policy.
