Parks Maintenance

Nature of the Position 
Reporting to the Manager of Community Services and under the direction of the Parks Foreman, Parks Maintenance plans and organizes grounds projects for district parks, beach accesses, trails, playing fields and green spaces, directs maintenance tasks, and designs, installs and maintains playing field infrastructure systems.
Job duties include recommending maintenance schedules, conditioning and preparing soils and turf, maintaining and repairing fields and field structures, operating a variety of hand and power tools to carry out the day to day maintenance of parks and garden areas, inspects playgrounds, fields and equipment, maintaining walkways, garbage collection, and inspecting and restocking supplies in public washrooms.

Essential Competencies 
Applicants must have Grade 12 (or equivalent); 2 years’ experience in landscaping, gardening or grounds maintenance, the ability to safely and competently operate a variety of garden and power tools, tractors, mowers and watering equipment; and hold a valid Class 5 Driver’s License. Applicants must have hands-on experience with the operation and maintenance of power and hand tools; the ability to exert, sustain and repeat physical and mental actions necessary to complete tasks; and the ability to work under conditions requiring strength, endurance and focused attention in all types of weather.
Applicants must have a professional, responsive, and positive work attitude; the ability to react quickly and remain calm in stressful situations; and the ability to communicate effectively and tactfully one–on- one and in a group environment.

Working Conditions 
This is a regular, full-time unionized position within the BCGEU. Wage for the position is set at Grid Level 7, $31.90– $35.44 plus an attractive benefits package. Hours of work will be 37.5 hours per week, Monday through Friday. Flexibility to work evenings and/or weekends will be occasionally required to meet operational needs.
