BC Hydro’s Supply Chain is integral to keep our business running and the lights on as we work with suppliers in virtually all aspects of our business. BC Hydro has strategically transformed its Supply Chain by implementing a full category management capability to better meet our requirements for quality, safety, and reliability in what we buy, for the best total cost.
This is achieved by grouping our spend channels into categories to maximize value and establish strong partnerships with our suppliers. Today, we are in an exciting time at BC Hydro with increased investment as we build out our system to meet the growing energy needs across our province. Our Supply Chain has never been more important and is a vital link in our growth plans.
Reporting to the Chief Supply Chain Officer, the Director, Operations and Enterprise Supply Chain is accountable for the success of BC Hydro’s Category Management capability. This includes overseeing the development and execution of BC Hydro’s category strategies for critical products and services to ensure BC Hydro is delivering our corporate priorities, including electrification, and growing capital plan, driving best overall value from our spend, and managing risk. Categories span the organization from technology to major equipment to engineering, field services and corporate services and equal over 80% of our annual spend.
In this role you will:

  • Continuously evolve the organization’s thinking, practices, processes, governance, relationships, and tools to ensure BC Hydro’s supply market needs are efficiently and effectively met in the context of fast-paced change. This will be supported through effective cross-organizational planning, deep internal and external relationships, and fostering innovative thinking and approaches.
  • Deliver results. As supply chain category sponsor, work collaboratively with executive steering committees, other directors and business sponsors, and cross-functional teams to understand and anticipate business strategies and complex needs.
  • Lead a team of professionals engaged in category strategy, sourcing and negotiation, supplier relationship management, business improvement, and applying best practices across the enterprise. Ensure effective organizational functioning through good planning, prioritization, reporting and other management processes.
  • Develop and implement plans that foster a ‘talent pipeline’ to maintain a strong leadership team, ongoing development, collaboration and engagement of employees, contractors, and cross functional project teams.


  • A university degree or diploma in a business discipline or other related field
  • A post-graduate degree, such as a Master of Business Administration or other Masters program, is an asset.
  • 10 years related business experience in progressively more responsible, complex roles, including people leadership. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Senior-level leadership and management experience within large, complex environments with supply chain accountabilities or related functions such as strategic sourcing / category management, supplier management, and contract management.
  • Leadership skills that consistently model alignment to BC Hydro’s values and the ability to contribute to the leadership of an organization to achieve its vision and goals in a complex environment with multiple stakeholders.
  • Experience with implementing large strategic changes that will inspire others to see new possibilities and solutions in an environment of continuous improvement.
  • Proven ability to successfully lead multiple high complexity / risk / impact projects / initiatives / strategies, and implement innovative, broad scope solutions at the same time - balancing priorities and trade-offs appropriately and using sound judgement.
  • A proven, progressive approach to team/people development with experience and success leading and managing teams and people in a variety of situations including direct reports, matrix environments, cross- functional teams, employees, and contractors.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively deal with varied perspectives, build consensus and negotiate and mediate situations to find mutually beneficial, value-add solutions and resolve conflicts.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate with all target audiences within the organization including executives.

Flexible work model role definitions
Our four role types identify the degree of flexibility an employee could have to work from home based on the type of work they do. The flexibility for an individual job is up to the manager for each position and the operational requirements. Employees also have the right to work full-time from the office if they prefer. All of our roles require at least some in-person time.
IBEW/Field – No option to work from home
Resident – Works primarily (4+ days per week) in the office. Hybrid – May be able to work from home up to 3 days per week. Remote – Works from home 4+ days per week
