The Fraser Valley Regional District is a local government that delivers over 100 services to residents living in our eight electoral areas and six member municipalities. We are the third most populous regional district in BC, stretching from Abbotsford to Boston Bar. We have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated, independent individual to fill the full-time position of Planning Technician. Under the direction of the Manager of Strategic Planning, you will work as part of a team to respond to inquiries for statistical information and regional growth strategy matters; support the planning and administration of expanding regional transit services; process, develop and prepare statistical reports relating to regional growth issues, with varying degrees of complexity; assist in the research and preparation of planning policy documents and bylaw development; and assist with the preparation of agenda materials, displays, related materials and minutes. Experience in transit planning, administration, and operation will be considered an asset in this position.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A degree in planning, geography or a related discipline or an acceptable combination of post secondary training and experience in a Local Government Planning Department, and will have completed courses in survey techniques, GIS, map interpretation, map compilation, graphics and statistical analysis.
  • Working knowledge of standard planning, building, and engineering nomenclature and practices and methods.
  • Excellent computer skills, with a high level of proficiency with Microsoft Office including Power Point, a sound knowledge of GIS and the ability to acquire a sound knowledge of graphics and desktop publishing software and electronic filing software.
  • Familiarity with all types of maps, air photographs (stereoscopy) and map catalogues.
  • Must be familiar with Provincial statutes and regulations and must acquire a sound knowledge of FVRD planning legislation and local geography.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to express thoughts and ideas clearly, and converse with a wide range of people including technical consultants, elected officials, senior staff, line staff and the general public to provide advice, make recommendations and make effective presentations
  • Excellent writing skills, with the ability to write clearly and concisely and prepare well-written technical and administrative reports
  • A valid Driver’s Licence

 
The start rate for this Union position is $33.47 per hour plus a comprehensive benefits package. Upon successful completion of the required six-month probationary period, the rate will increase to $39.37 per hour.
