Heavy Duty Mechanic, TQ

Temporary Full-Time ($40.12/hour – 2023 Rates) Pay Grade 11 

The District of Oak Bay is a picturesque seaside community located within the Greater Victoria Region, with a population of +18,000. The Public Works department is seeking a Heavy Duty Mechanic, TQ to temporarily join their team for a minimum period of three months, which may be extended dependent on operational requirements. Ideally, the successful candidate will work full-time hours between Monday to Friday, however, recent retirees or apprentices looking for flexible working arrangements or part-time employment are encouraged to apply!
 
The Heavy Duty Mechanic, TQ performs skilled mechanical work at the journeyman level in the overhaul, repair, and maintenance of automotive and related power equipment in the shop and field. An employee of this class works under the general supervision of the Mechanic Foreman but uses considerable independent judgment in their work. Oral and written assignments are received from the Mechanic Foreman, who checks and tests the work in progress and upon completion for workmanship and conformance to desirable standards.
 
Our ideal candidate has completed Grade 12 or equivalent, supplemented by technical courses such as Commercial Vehicle Inspection Certification, as well as considerable general and heavy-duty mechanical experience, including diesel mechanics at the journeyman level, a valid and subsisting Class 3 BC Driver’s license with air brake endorsement, and an applicable mechanical trade certificate. This position is represented by CUPE Local 374.
