This is moderately complex technical and clerical work related to processing and regulation of sign applications. An employee of this class reviews sign applications and the related sign component of plans for compliance and preliminary approval with the sign bylaw and related requirements; investigates sign complaints, completes and signs related enforcement letters explaining violations and compliance requirements. Conducts site inspections to determine existing signs and their impact on an application; takes site photographs; determines if there will be property encroachments and covenant requirements; completes final sign inspection for compliance with plans, or requests same from department inspectors if required. Liaises with a wide variety of internal and external contacts and prepares comprehensive sign plans for large commercial sites; interprets the sign bylaw to balance the needs of developers and/or their representatives and to comply with the sign bylaw and related regulations. Explains and interprets sign bylaw requirements and related regulations to a variety of internal and external contacts and provides sign regulation recommendations and input during zoning and text amendment meetings. May provide direction to staff performing related technical and clerical sign application duties, as required. Prepares records, files, reports and correspondence and provides a variety of clerical support related to sign bylaw compliance. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include completion of Grade 12 supplemented by technical courses related to the work, plus sound related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Considerable knowledge of the bylaws, rules and regulations, department policies, practices and procedures related to the work performed. Ability to review the sign component of plans and related applications; ability to inspect signs for compliance with bylaws and explain and apply the bylaws and procedures to assist a wide variety of contacts on matters related to the work. Ability to review and input sign related information into the City’s license, inspection and permit system (Energov). Ability to provide direction to staff engaged in related tasks as required; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts. Ability to maintain a variety of records, files and reports related to the work and compose routine correspondence and exercise signing authority within defined limits. A Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia is required.

35 hours weekly

Current Incumbent: 
Monday 8:00am – 4:00pm
Tuesday 8:00am – 4:00pm
Wednesday 8:00am – 4:00pm (week 1)

Vacancy:

Thursday 8:00am – 4:00pm
Friday 8:00am – 4:00pm

This position is a Job Share opportunity until May 2028.
