Hours: Full Time. 40 hours per week. 8 hours per day between 7:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday, with a ½ hour unpaid meal break
Union/Exempt: CUPE Local 105
Reporting to Operations Management, the successful candidate will be responsible for the installation, maintenance and repair of all aspects of the water/wastewater infrastructure. The successful applicant must meet the physical demands of the position, comply with safe work practices and recognize that this position has specific importance to the health and safety of citizens. As a result, the successful applicant must understand the importance of prioritizing and completing tasks. The ability to work in a team and independently is required. This position is attendance sensitive and is required to work overtime and weekend on call as operationally necessary as per articles 19.03 and 25.07 of the collective agreement. This position must work toward and obtain Level II Certification in Waste Water Collection and Water Distribution.
QUALIFICATIONS:
In order to be considered for this position you must have the following:
Required:
- Grade 12 or GED;
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence (Driver’s Abstract required);
- At least one of the five requirements listed below, which all will be required within two years:
- Must have a minimum of 4,000 hours of recent and relevant work experience pertaining to installing and repairing water distribution systems or sanitary and storm sewer collection systems or similar civil infrastructure and/or other relevant experience, such as plumbing, pipefitting;
- Water Distribution Operator 1 EOCP certification;
- Wastewater Collection Operator 1 EOCP certification;
- Chlorine Handlers’ Certification;
- California State University at Sacramento (CSU) Wastewater Collection System Operation & Maintenance Volume 1 and CSU Water Distribution System Operation & Maintenance Volume 1 (these are home study correspondence courses); and,
- Must be able to obtain a RCMP Criminal Record & Vulnerable Sector Check. Results of which will be reviewed by the City for employment.
Required to obtain within two years
- Emergency First Aid (Level 1);
- WHMIS Certification;
- Confined Space Certification;
- Traffic Control Certification; and
- Class 3 with Air Brake endorsement.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY:
- Complete understanding of water/wastewater utility i.e. function of all parts and material from reservoirs to outfalls;
- Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision and apply critical thinking principles;
- Ability to work independently and to accomplish tasks and assignments;
- Able to follow safe work practices;
- Ability to work with co-workers and deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner;
- Good interpersonal skills;
- Considerable knowledge of Public Works maintenance and construction practices, which includes the use of equipment, materials and methods used in maintenance, construction and repair activities of municipal works including, but not limited to, Utilities and Roads, systems;
- Ability to perform labouring in and around vehicles, equipment and pedestrian traffic;
- Considerable skill, experience and understanding in the proper and safe operation of tools and equipment, such as but not limited to, tractors, pumps, hand tools, rakes, grinders, shovels, pick, broom, weed eaters, litter grasper, and gas, diesel, electric or air powered tools required to complete the assigned tasks;
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and evaluate data relevant to the operation and implementation of operational changes;
- Demonstrated thorough knowledge of the laws, rules and regulations, standards and specifications, municipal bylaws and policies pertaining to the water and wastewater utilities.
- Sufficient physical strength, stamina and coordination to perform heavy manual outdoor work in all weather conditions;
- Knowledge of WorkSafe BC Rules and Regulations;
- Must be clean-shaven in order to ensure that a respirator will seal effectively on your face to protect from breathing in contaminants; and,
- Perform other duties as required.
FITNESS REQUIREMENT:
- Must be clean shaven to enable a respirator to be worn as per WorkSafe BC Regulations;
- Ability to pass an annual full-face respirator fit test;
- Good physical condition with sufficient strength and stamina to perform heavy manual work outside in the presence of all-weather conditions; and,
- Heavy lifting, pulling and managing equipment/objects are part of the assigned tasks. Employees must be able to handle weight up to 100 lbs and able to lift 40 lb.
