Job Summary and a day in the life of the Community Sport & Physical Literacy Manager
- Oversee the development, delivery and growth of the Oval’s Community Sport programming (LTD stages: Active Start, Fundamentals, Learn to Train, Active for Life) including, but not limited to, learn to skate programming, court-based programming, Hockey Tots to U11 programming, recreational climbing programs, and summer and specialty camps.
- Oversees the rental of Oval sport facilities to community groups and members of the public. Facilities may include ice rinks, courts, track zone, outdoor turf field, climbing wall, beach courts and multipurpose rooms. In collaboration with other key Oval staff, allocates and manages the court, track and ice schedule – including programs, rentals, leagues, drop-in, camps, etc.
- Manage, lead, mentor and develop the Community Sport team of programmers, coordinators, coaches and instructors. Develop, coordinate and deliver professional development opportunities. Evaluates employee performance, provides feedback and takes corrective action as required.
- Develops and integrates departmental goals and staff workplans in alignment with corporate priorities and vision.
- Actively focused on sales, ways to increases efficiencies and opportunities to innovate offerings through the use of technology.
- Financial management of Oval Community Sport programs and rentals including preparation of annual operating and capital budgets, monitoring revenues and expenditures, compilation of department metrics and preparation of information for reports and presentations. The incumbent will research and recommend athletic and sport equipment purchases and oversees the management of all departmental inventory assets and their replacement as required.
- Assesses proposals brought forward by outside companies to run programs in the Oval.
- Act as a key point of contact with various local and provincial sport groups. Take lead account management role with key strategic and large Oval sport partners.
- Collaborates with Marketing and Communications in the conceptualization and development of marketing strategies and assets to promote specific services and identifies opportunities for joint initiatives with other service providers.
- Researches, assesses and makes operational recommendations on industry initiatives such as Safe Sport, Diversity and Inclusion, Responsible Coaching Movement, and Sport for Life programming.
- Establishes and maintains liaison with the City’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services staff, community groups, program partners and others to assess needs of the community and appropriate responses to those needs.
- Works in close collaboration with the team of Managers leading the Oval’s High Performance, Fitness and Longevity, Events, Richmond Olympic Experience, Member Care, Finance, IT and Retail lines of businesses.
- Prepares various reports, business plans and memos for senior management team
- Other projects and duties as assigned

Qualifications:
- University degree in a related discipline, demonstration of ongoing professional development courses in the area of sport, leadership, marketing and management.
- Minimum of 7 years of extensive experience in the field of sport, athletics, program management, recreation and facility operations with a career path reflecting increased levels of responsibility and a minimum of 3 years of supervisory experience in a large scale facility.
- Must possess the ability and commitment to work in a fast-paced environment and set priorities while concurrently balancing a number of projects.
- Must have a strong understanding of sport and recreation trends, demographics and industry standards.
- Demonstrates ability to work with a diverse client base (children, youth, adults, seniors and special populations).
- Knowledge of Xplor (PerfectMind) registration software.
- Excellent customer service skills and proven experience in building and sustaining effective relationships.
- Must have a thorough technical understanding of a variety of sports
- Possesses considerable knowledge of Sport for Life and the Long Term Development in Sport and Physical Activity Model.
- Strong consensus building and conflict resolution skills are essential.
- Strong teambuilding skills to coach and lead a team to deliver outstanding programs, services and customer service.
- Must be proficient in MS Office.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, solid presentation skills.
- Aptitude for financial matters and ‘big picture’ thinking.
- Ability to work independently and in a team setting.
- Must be able to complete a successful Criminal Record Check.
Salary and Benefits: $77,037-$96,297 per annum (2022) dependent on experience and qualifications. We provide a comprehensive extended health and dental plan, in addition to an individual and dependent/s Health Spending Account, Paid Sick leave, Vacation, and Municipal Pension Plan (MPP)

Employment Type: Regular Full-time (37.5 hours per week) 9-day fortnight. Flexible working Program.
