Recreation Attendant III

The District of Kitimat is recruiting for up to two Recreation Attendant III positions. Working in the Leisure Services Department, under the supervision of the Arenas Coordinator or Horticulturist, this position supervises and performs a variety of duties supporting the operation and maintenance of the Arena’s and Parks.

What will you do?
Major Functions
Supports the operation and maintenance of the Arena:
  • Monitor and performs basic maintenance on ice plant and systems machinery including replacing filters, compressor oil, chiller pot drains and blade changes on ice resurfacing machine
  • Makes and maintains the ice surface using various equipment such as an ice resurfacing machine, edger, etc.
  • Supervise and train RA’s and rink marshals in all related job duties
  • Assist Arena Coordinator in the creation of standard operating procedures, and review of safe work plans for approval by department head or delegate
  • Conducts monthly building inspections, ensuring functionality of emergency lighting, gas detection devices, fire extinguishers, eye wash stations, respirator filters, AED machines, first aid kits, exit lighting, and exit doors
  • Opens and closes the building
  • Janitorial tasks of the building such as mopping, waxing floors, sweeping, sanitizing, cleaning windows and glass, cleaning change rooms, washrooms and common areas, recycling
  • Performs set up and take down duties for events
  • Leads crew and conducts ice surface maintenance including ice cleaning, edging, chinking, minor ice repairs, putting in and taking out the ice, including painting lines and decals and hosing
  • Conducts minor maintenance to building, change ice glass, repair boards, lighting, seating, windows, doors, furniture, washroom, and equipment
  • Inspect condition of equipment and nets
  • Change marquee sign
  • Monitors, assists, and directs patrons and user groups, including during emergency evacuations, and reports concerns to supervisor
  • Provides customer service
  • Handles, stores and performs inventory counts on equipment and supplies
  • Administers first aid as required and contacts first responders as required and completes associated paperwork
  • Clears snow from roof, entranceways, pathways, salts and sands as required
  • Removal of sand from entranceways and pathways adjacent to the facilities in the Spring
  • Completes facility attendance count
  • Oversees and may work with tradespersons to complete required tasks
  • Conducts tool box talks
 
Supports the operation and maintenance of the Municipal Campgrounds:
  • Leads season opening and closing of the campgrounds
  • Performs daily drive through and inspection
  • Cleans washrooms, collects garbage, maintains inventory and cleanliness of park areas
  • Provides customer service
  • Enforces park rules with campers and guests
  • Collects money from patrons, records transactions and completes bank deposits
  • Rakes sites, brushing, pressure washing, lawn maintenance, and weeding
 
Supports the operation and maintenance of the Municipal Playgrounds:
  • Inspects and maintains community playgrounds: rake gravel, empty garbage, maintain stock of dog waste bags, check for and remove vandalism, mow and weed whack surrounding grass areas, perform minor repairs
  • Checks and cleans community portable toilets
  • Set up and take down of tennis courts nets
 
Supports the maintenance of District maintained gardens under the direction of the Horticulturist:
  • Waters trees and does minor pruning of public trees
  • Preparation of garden beds, planting, weeding, watering, rototilling, deadheading, bulb planting, and pulling up beds
  • Lawn mowing and weed whacking

What do you bring with you?
  • Technical Safety BC Refrigeration Operators Certificate
  • Building Service Worker Level 1
  • Confined Space Awareness
  • Drivers License, Class 5/7N
  • WHMIS
  • Ability to troubleshoot and maintain a refrigeration system and ice plant operations knowledge and Technical Safety BC regulations
  • Knowledge of janitorial standards and methods and the ability to train and direct the work of employees
