This is a supervisory work over a diversified group of skilled or semi-skilled trades subordinates engaged in automotive maintenance, machining, welding and repairing minor equipment tasks working out of Laurel Street Works Yard. The incumbent plans, assigns, schedules, evaluates and may participate in the activities of subordinate foreperson, mechanics, machinists and welders engaged in maintaining functional parts of automotive and mechanical equipment and machinery; diagnosing mechanical malfunctions, repairing, overhauling and servicing equipment as required. Inspects defective machinery and equipment in shop and field to determine extent of wear or damage; prepares inspection reports to indicate nature of repairs and replacements; oversees subordinates that perform vehicle inspections, ensuring that all procedures are complaint with the specifications of the regulatory bodies; prepares quotes detailing the amount of material and labour required to complete jobs and establishes preventive maintenance schedules. A Trades Foreperson 2 assists in compiling technical specifications for the purchase of vehicles and shop equipment; performs administrative tasks related to work and responds to emergency calls during off-shift hours. The incumbent will participate in the recruitment process and provide orientation and training to employees; provides leadership and guidance to employees including coaching, discipline and performance management; and prepares and provides documentation and/or confidential reports related to grievances and/or employee issues. Performs related work as required
Qualifications include completion of Grade 12, supplemented by related technical training; completion of a recognized Trade Certification of Qualification program and extensive experience in the applicable trades including some supervisory experience; or and equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Thorough technical knowledge in related trades with ability to provide solutions and training; knowledge of the function, procedures, policies, regulations and methods related to the maintenance of a diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment and of the applicable safety legislation, policies and procedures as related to industrial environment. The incumbent will have sound knowledge of a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and computer office applications. The ability to lead, guide and support a team of skilled and semi-skilled trades subordinates and provide them with solutions for a variety of issues; to communicate effectively, prioritize customer requests and resolve conflicts as they arise; ability to establish and maintain relationships with both internal and external department stakeholders. An Authorized Inspector License from the Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE), Class 3 with air brake endorsement, Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia and a Trade Certification in one of the following: Truck and Transport Mechanic, Automotive Service Technician, Heavy Duty Equipment Technician or equivalent are required.
