Main Purpose & Function
This is a skilled sign making work at the journeyman level involving the application of fundamental trade practices to the design and production of a wide variety of signs.
The position reports to a Superintendent and works closely with a small team and provides work direction to several subordinates performing routine sign making tasks. Other contacts include other City Departments, contractors, and members of the public.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Receives oral and written direction and instructions from Superintendent.
- Designs and produces signage, graphics, murals, wraps, hoarding, using computer software, printers, cutters and CNC routers.
- Prepares a variety of substrates in preparation for applying sign related materials.
- Operates a design programs and printers/cutters to produce lettering, graphics, layouts and designs of some complexity.
- Uses tools and equipment for hand lettering as required.
- Maintains a clean and organized work area.
- Acts as a representative of the City, to deal with the public in an effective, courteous and respectful manner.
- Provides direction to an Operations Worker on installation.
- Quotes clients for the scope of work: materials, labour hours, work plan, deadline and makes suggestions on alternate designs, materials, layouts as needed.
- Other duties/responsibilities as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- Completion of twelfth grade supplemented by technical training related to the work and considerable experience in sign making or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Thorough knowledge of the standard practices, standards, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in a variety of sign making tasks.
- Thorough knowledge of the standard practices and methods of operating computers and computer hardware as it relates to graphic design techniques and processes.
- Considerable knowledge of the care and use of hand tools essential to the work.
- Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety practices peculiar to the trade.
- Skill in performing a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks such as applying a variety of printed and non-printed adhesive vinyl, by hand, to a variety of flat, curved, smooth and textured surfaces.
- Ability to use a computer, related periphery equipment such as printers, engravers and plotter cutters and current sign and graphics software such as Printer RIP software, Adobe Creative Suite, including Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat and a variety of cutter, plotter and CNC router programming software.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to work with various design file formats, sketches, drawings and blueprints.
- Ability to layout and design a variety of signs.
- Ability to take initiative and work independently for extended periods of time with limited supervision.
- Ability to assign and supervise the work of subordinates engaged in painting tasks.
- Ability to operate and maintain an assortment of tools and equipment typical of the sign making industry e.g. digital printers, cutters and engraving machines.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, in writing and verbally, with co-workers, contractors, business owners and members of the public
- A current and valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License or higher and a Satisfactory National Safety Code driving record
- 5 years accumulation of no more than 9 points, not in excess of 3 points per single year
- 3 years accumulation of no more than 1 preventable work related driving or equipment operating accident in any single year
- Employees who do not demonstrate a satisfactory driving record will have their application reviewed in more detail
