Utilities Equipment Operator
($33.29 per hour - 2023 rates)
Applications are invited for the full-time position of Utilities Equipment Operator in the Utilities Department for the District of North Saanich. This position carries out work of some complexity involving the operation and maintenance of the waterworks and sewer system and equipment operation performed in a municipal public work setting. An employee of this class is responsible for the operation of rubber-tired backhoe loaders, hydro-excavator, single and tandem axles dump trucks, rubber tired and tracked excavators and other equipment commonly used in municipal maintenance and construction work. The Utilities Equipment Operator assists a supervisor in making permanent or temporary repairs to the system to maintain services, and to alleviate or prevent conditions which endanger public health and safety, or to public or private property. The type of equipment operated, and the time devoted to operating activities may vary depending on the nature of the work assignment, seasonal weather conditions or the discretion of a supervisor. The Utilities Equipment Operator works without close supervision and solves the majority of field problems. Difficult problems or policy matters are referred to a supervisory or managerial staff member. Written or verbal assignments are issued by supervisory staff who review all results through observation, discussion, and perusal of reports.
Applicants must have high school graduation supplemented by successful completion or ability to complete within an acceptable time frame the following certifications or equivalents: Environmental Operators Certification Program Level II Water Distribution, Level I Wastewater Collection and Cross-Connection Certification. Additionally, applicants must have a minimum of 2 years’ experience operating a wide variety of construction equipment, preferably on underground utilities in local government as well as a Class 3 BC Drivers Licence.
This position is a Union position and is subject to the terms and conditions in the collective agreement between District of North Saanich and the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 374.
