Mackenzie County is Alberta’s largest County. Located in the northwestern corner of the province approximately 700 kilometers from Edmonton, with the corporate office located in Fort Vermilion, and sub-offices in High Level, La Crete, and Zama City. The County comprises 12 percent of Alberta’s entire landmass; at just over 80,000 square kilometers it is larger than the province of New Brunswick.

The County offers a mix of flat arable land with boreal forest, thus accounting for active agriculture, forestry, and tourism industries which drive the economies of the County’s three hamlets: Fort Vermilion, La Crete, and Zama City. Mackenzie County has experienced significant growth since 1998, and the trend is continuing as many businesses and newcomers recognize the unique lifestyle and employment opportunities the County provides.

THE OPPORTUNITY
Reporting to Council, the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) is responsible for providing vision and leadership to members of the senior management team and for the administration and coordination of the delivery of services to the County’s residents and businesses in a manner that will ensure the sustainable utilization of human, financial and physical resources of the County. The CAO implements the objectives, policies and programs approved by Council and in accordance with the Municipal Government Act, the bylaws of the County and all other applicable legislation.

  • Director of Finance
  • Director of Operations
  • Director of Community Services
  • Director of Utilities
  • Director of Projects and Infrastructure


THE PERSON
Qualifications & Experience
The ideal candidate will possess a strong track record of success as a leader in a complex multi-faceted organization, preferably in a rural municipality and/or publicly funded environment. Post-secondary education, ongoing professional development and a CLGM designation would be considered an asset. A combination of education/training and demonstrated progressive leadership experience will also be considered. In addition, the successful candidate possesses the following background and experience:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Municipal Government Act as well as other legislation and policies pertaining to the County.
  • Experience accessing grants/funding through federal/provincial departments and agencies to support the County’s programs and initiatives.
  • Background and experience in economic development coupled with well-rounded business leadership experience would be considered a strong asset.
  • Commitment to residing and being active and visible in the community.
  • Understanding of rural communities and culture.
  • Experience building positive relationships and working with diverse stakeholders including businesses, community organizations, elected officials, various levels of government, and indigenous communities.
  • Demonstrated record of working effectively with elected officials, volunteer boards and committees and public participation processes and policy and service delivery.
  • Proven experience in strategic planning, organization development and in achieving results in building team and labour relations.
  • Experience in implementing capital works and infrastructure improvement programs.
  • A combination of municipal experience and leadership roles in other complex sectors will also be considered.
