GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
The Head Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring the safety of facility patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies on and off the pool deck. The position is to help ensure the aquatic facility’s programming and scheduling is running seamlessly overall. This position involves the instruction of various swimming programs and lifeguarding of recreational swimming. They are responsible to ensure all safety standards are met while supervising lifeguards, and instructors.  This position will assist management to train staff in chemical use and mechanical operations. The incumbent must demonstrate good conflict resolution skills and work as a team with their colleagues. This position will have training in advanced courses so that they can assist management in program development and quality control.

Must lead by example by understanding, adhering and enforcing all worker responsibilities as outlined in the current Towns' Policy and Procedures. The incumbent must also understand, adhere to and enforce all Town Health & Safety policies, work procedures, rules, and relevant directives.

The Head Lifeguard is responsible for leading and coordinating aquatics staff while on shift.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
This position reports to: Aquatics Manager → General Manager of Community & Recreation → Chief Administrative Officer

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Provides supervision on the deck to patrons of the facility and instructs lessons/classes.
  • Provides supervision at the Aquatic Facility to all, includes, lifeguards, reception and patrons. This includes, enforcing policy, rules and regulations, approving over time hours as required, and providing redirection and/or disciplinary action to employees when necessary.
  • Leads by example by providing excellent levels of customer service to the patrons of the Aquatic Facility. This includes but not limited to helping customers with questions and complaints, providing information about the facility and available programs and services, providing excellent service while teaching, and taking orders and/or processing payments.
  • Ensure all classes are taught with safety and enthusiasm, covering all items in each level of program and at the same time satisfies the needs of each individual student.
  • Lead team members in an effective, timely and calmly manner through emergency responses. Ensuring appropriate management is advised of any emergency or potential emergencies when safe to do so.
  • Maintain awareness of new programs and teaching methods.
  • Through performance management and annual performance review process, helps build meaningful programs by giving constructive feedback and support. Provides growth and development opportunities to staff regarding their teaching abilities.
  • Demonstrates a high level of performance regarding instructional and lifeguard behaviour.
  • Provides innovative solutions to streamline processes and create efficiencies in the department.
  • Attends and participates in regular in-service training. Providing assistance when running a training in-service when required.
  • Ensuring lifeguarding standards are maintained during each shift also ensuring that the pool is adequately guarded according to pool policy for the safety of patrons.
  • Responsible for maintaining the mechanical system including bumps, media changes, hair and lint strainer cleaning, chemical balancing, and other mechanical requirements.
  • Aids in the training of staff on the aquatic facility mechanical system.
  • Ensure performance standards are maintained by employees during shift, including but not limited to quality of lessons, deck supervision and customer service.
  • Sets the example of a safety-first culture by demonstrating a positive and safe work environment. Work with the Aquatics Manager and safety department on enhancing and implementing an aquatics specific safety program.
  • Ensures all safety documents are completed, read, approved, and forwarded to safety in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Works closely with the Aquatics Manager to develop, host and participate in regular department and safety meetings.
  • Ensures the team receives and participates in training and development programs.  Including work specific competencies, mentorship and development programs, and safety.
  • Assist the Aquatics Manager in assessing and recommend staffing levels and requirements.
  • Maintain close liaison with the Aquatics Manager with regards to activities and needs for the aquatics department.
  • Ensure proper facility opening and closing procedures are executed. Including daily facility inspection and report of any unsafe conditions or equipment.
  • Ensure records and reports are completed timely, and thoroughly.
  • Ensure all cleaning standards are maintained as well as performing all cleaning duties as per all sanitation plans.
  • Monitors inventory on operating items such as, lesson supplies, first aid supplies, chemicals, etc. to ensure the facility is stocked accordingly.
  • Assist management in developing and implementing emergency action plans (EAP'S)
  • Assist in the Marketing and promotion of our programs and special events
  • Other duties as assigned.

DECISION MAKING ROLE
The Head Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring staffing levels are adequate for maintaining service and safety levels while on shift at the Aquatic Centre.

This position will work very closely with the Aquatics Manager to ensure the success of the facility providing regular and routine communications about observations while on shift.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
  • Experience supervising aquatics
  • Leadership and public relations skills.
  • Solid interpersonal and customer service skills with a positive and approachable attitude
  • Must maintain a high level of confidentiality and professionalism
  • Ability to communicate tactfully, clearly and effectively; and exercise mature judgement in dealing with others.
  • High level of critical and logical and analytical thinking
  • Standard First Aid and CPR Certificate with AED/O2
  • NL certificate
  • LSI Leadership Award (Life saving instructor)
  • WHMIS
  • Pool Operator – level 2
  • Thorough knowledge and application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques.
  • Knowledge of basic operation of all pool, office and janitorial equipment and supplies
  • An understanding of facility characteristics, rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Decision-making skills.
  • Computer competency in Windows, Activenet and database applications.
  • Minimum 2 years of lifeguarding
