Ok, but what is a Development Technician at the Town of Cochrane?
Reporting to the Manager, Planning this position is responsible for providing clerical and technical support to the administration of the Planning section. This is accomplished by receiving, documenting, and ensuring completeness of: subdivision and planning compliance certificates, development permits, subdivision applications, and land use development applications. This position is also responsible for issuing planning compliance certificates and minor development permits in accordance with the Town’s Land Use Bylaw and other related statutory regulations. This position provides support to planners and excellent customer service to enquiries from both internal and external stakeholders related to these planning functions within the Town of Cochrane.

As the Development Technician, you will:

  • Act as the first point of contact for public inquiries and applications related to all planning and development matters related to the Municipal Government Act, Subdivision and Development Regulations, the Municipal Development Plan, Land Use Bylaw, Inter-Municipal Development Plans, and other statutory and non-statutory plans.
  • Receive, process, and issue compliance certificates by reviewing legal surveys to ensure existing developments meet the Land Use Bylaw.
  • Act as a resource to provide accurate information to internal departments, contractors, landowners and the public related to Planning requirements and process.
  • Receive, document, review and determine the completeness of subdivision and development permit applications in accordance to Town of Cochrane application standards.
  • Receive, document and process minor development permit applications, including signs, accessory buildings, accessory suites, home-based businesses, and various minor variance applications related to associated compliance applications.
  • Conduct Land Titles research and other activities to assist in the subdivision, compliance, and development application process.
  • Prepare agendas, meeting minutes and reports for meetings as required
  • Provide back-up coverage and provide advice related to building permits for Safety Codes Technician.
  • Provide administrative and technical support and assistance to Planners on day-to-day files and the development of statutory and non-statutory planning documents as required.

  • Demonstrates good organizational, time management, writing, and computer-related technical skills applicable to the Section’s responsibilities.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Strong working knowledge and skills with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel and PowerPoint. Experience with GIS considered an asset.
