ABOUT THE ROLE
Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller is responsible for overseeing the City’s accounting, reporting, accounts payable, and capital project reporting/capitalization functions. The Controller is responsible for completing the City’s Financial Statements and other statutory reports; interpreting agreements with City wholly owned and shared-cost agencies; and ensuring compliance with accounting policies, procedures, and regulations. Additional responsibilities include reviewing reports and recommendations for Council, participating on inter-departmental task forces and internal City committees, reviewing current financial policies, and developing new policies. The Controller leads the payroll team, overseeing all aspects of payroll planning, processing, reporting, as well as maintaining and enhancing the Peoplesoft HCM system.
 
The successful candidate will have a post-secondary Bachelor’s degree in financial management (with a focus on accounting) along with a recognized accounting designation (CPA) and a minimum of seven years of related accounting experience, preferably in local government. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of Public Sector Accounting Standards with related supervisory experience. The ideal candidate will have advanced communication and interpersonal skills grounded in strong professional judgement and political astuteness. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. A current Police Information Check and valid BC Class 5 drivers' license is required.
