Main Purpose & Function 
Reporting to the Senior Geotechnical Engineer and working closely with the Branch’s Archaeology, Indigenous Relations and Geotechnical team, the Geotechnical Engineer provides design services, recommendations, and reviews, as well as standards and policy development related to geotechnical engineering such as shoring and excavation, soil investigation, infrastructure monitoring, asset management, and slope stability. The position is responsible for implementing geotechnical requirements related to development; developing citywide strategies and updating policies/bylaws related to geotechnical engineering; improving the City’s understanding of geology; and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders with respect to geotechnical initiatives.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
  • Reviews geotechnical studies related to development (ie. shoring and excavation design and drawings)
  • Develops, creates, and updates City standards, policies and strategies related to geotechnical reviews for developments and City’s infrastructure
  • Keeps up to date on emerging practices, policies and innovations related to geotechnical engineering
  • Carries out design and analysis for geotechnical components related to utilities, transportation, energy, and other civil infrastructure projects delivered by the City
  • Provides input on geotechnical matters to other internal branches and departments and external stakeholders
  • Reviews geotechnical reports, data, and models to advance the City’s geotechnical understanding
  • Prepares reports and presentations to educate staff and decision makers on geotechnical issues in the City of Vancouver
  • Prepares terms of references on a variety of geotechnical studies and projects such as, but not limited to, site investigation, installation of monitoring equipment, shoring and excavation, slope stability and retaining wall design
  • Builds and improves data management with regards to soil conditions throughout the City, and updates the existing GIS maps and databases
  • Leads site investigations and field monitoring of geotechnical aspects of City’s infrastructure projects to provide engineering recommendations for design and construction
  • Prepares cost estimates, tracks spending, and recommends resource allocation of project expenses
  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Geological Engineering and minimum three years’ related experience in geotechnical engineering, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  • Registration or eligibility to register as a Professional Engineer or Professional Geoscientist in British Columbia. Engineer-In-Training with considerable experience may also be considered.
 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge and understanding of geotechnical design and reviews regarding development, including but not limited to shoring and excavation, field review and monitoring
  • Knowledge of municipal government and its roles, responsibilities, and operations
  • Working knowledge of geotechnical principles and techniques, City bylaws, and the municipal development permitting processes
  • Understanding federal, provincial, and regional requirements related to geotechnical engineering
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a variety of stakeholders, with experience writing technical reports
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills with the ability to effectively and efficiently prioritize actions in response to numerous and diverse demands
  • Excellent analytical, critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Ability to understand multi-disciplinary designs and concepts depicted on construction drawings
  • Ability to exercise independent judgement, diplomacy, and tact
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive, productive relationships at all levels in the organization and external stakeholders
  • Proficient in the use of data management software such as ESRI (ArcGIS) an asset

Engineer-In-Training: Salary Range 60: $69,071 to $86,329 per annum
Professional Engineer or Professional Geoscientist: Salary Range 80: $89,293 to $111,609 per annum
