Network Analyst

The Board of Education of School District No. 51 (Boundary) invites applications for the position of Network Analyst.

The District
School District No. 51 (Boundary) encompasses 11 school sites from Big White Ski Resort east to Christina Lake, as well as 2 bus/maintenance garages and a school board office located in Grand Forks. The District employs approximately 275 employees, serves 1,300 students in K-12 and administers an annual budget of $20,000,000. SD51 is a small, rural district that operates on a 4-day school week with students in session Monday to Thursday. Grand Forks is situated on the confluence of the Kettle and Granby rivers and is approximately 2.5 hours from Nelson, Kelowna and Spokane. The Boundary is a land of fertile fields, lush valleys, lakes, rivers and mountains where you can find unlimited adventure through four distinct seasons.

The Position
The Network Analyst’s role is to ensure the stable operation of the in-house computer network. This includes planning, developing, installing, configuring, maintaining, supporting, and optimizing all network hardware, software, and communication links. The individual will also analyze and resolve end-user hardware and software computer problems in a timely and accurate fashion and provide end-user training where required.

Duties & Responsibilities 
  • Manage security solutions, including firewall, VPN access, web and intrusion detection systems. 
  • Manage all network hardware and equipment, including routers, switches, wireless and firewalls. 
  • Ensure network connectivity of all workstations. 
  • Administer equipment, hardware and software upgrades. 
  • Practice network asset management, including maintenance of network component inventory and related documentation and technical specifications information. 
  • Administer and maintain end user accounts, permissions, and access rights. 
  • Perform security audits, backups and recovery. 
  • Monitor and test network performance and provide network performance statistics and reports. 
  • Recommend, schedule, and perform network improvements, upgrades, and repairs. 
  • Manage and/or provide guidance to junior members of the team. 
  • Oversee installation, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of end user workstation hardware, software, and peripheral devices. 
  • Interact and negotiate with vendors, outsourcers, and contractors to secure network products and services. 
  • Conduct research on network products, services, protocols, and standards to support network procurement and development. 
  • Perform network design and capacity planning. 
  • Develop, implement and maintain policies, procedures and associated training plans for network resource administration, appropriate use, and disaster recovery. 
  • Establish service level agreements with end users.

Education & Experience: 
  • Completion of a minimum two (2) year related diploma from an accredited program and /or five (5) years equivalent work experience in a senior technical analytical position. 
  • Certification in Cisco (CCNP or equivalent preferred), Apple and Microsoft networks. 
  • Valid BC Driver’s License.

Skills & Abilities: 
  • Working technical knowledge of network and PC operating systems, including Microsoft Windows and Mac O/S. 
  • Application support experience with Intermapper, Wireshark, DNS, DHCP and other routing protocols. 
  • Working technical knowledge of current network hardware, protocols and standards, including Cisco switches and routers and PaloAlto firewalls. 
  • Working technical knowledge of Cisco wireless networks and related components. 
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, as well as analytical and problem-solving abilities with keen attention to detail. 
  • Self-motivated and directed, with the ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks i n a high-pressure environment.  
  • Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment. 
  • Ability to attend to emergent issues outside of standard work schedule as required.

Work Conditions: 
  • Sitting for extended periods of time. 
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, power tools, and to handle other computer components. 
  • Occasional inspection of cables in floors and ceilings. 
  • Lifting and transporting of moderately heavy objects, such as computers and peripherals.

This full-time, permanent position is 40 hours per week, with typical schedule being Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm.
