Position Overview

The City of Kamloops is now accepting applications from post-secondary engineering students for work within our Engineering Division. The successful candidate will commit to a four-month work term from approximately January 4, 2022, to April 30, 2022. If you are a current engineering student looking to gain experience and knowledge in municipal government, this could be the opportunity for you!

Typical duties of this position include:

  • Assisting with record drawing preparation for City-designed and constructed road and utility projects.
  • Scanning paper drawings of road and utility projects, and filing in electronic format.
  • Assembling issued for review or construction drawing packages, which includes plotting, trimming and binding.
  • Organizing approved products submissions and literature.
  • Reviewing and researching CSA or other engineering standards.
  • Assist with roads planning tasks.
  • Assisting with utilities related field work including sanitary sewer flow monitoring and water booster station testing.
  • Reviewing sanitary sewer and storm main video inspection footage.
  • Utilities system site inspections and inventory.
  • Performing other miscellaneous engineering-related tasks, as assigned.

The successful candidate must have the following qualifications:

  1. Completion of senior secondary school or its equivalent.
  2. Must be currently enrolled in a post-secondary engineering education program. Third or Fourth Year Engineering students are preferred.
  3. Proficient in intermediate Word and intermediate Excel, as demonstrated through testing. A 70% pass rate is required.
  4. Previous AutoCAD and Autodesk Civil 3D experience is preferred.

This position will receive 14% in lieu of all benefits, vacation, stat holidays, and health time.

For new hires, and for those working in designated positions of trust, including those working directly with vulnerable persons, no formal offer of employment will be made until an applicant completes a police information check.
Please note that this position falls under the attached Student Hires Letter of Understanding.
