City of Coquitlam

Staff Lawyer

Temporary Full Time

One of BC’s Top Employers, the City of Coquitlam offers meaningful career opportunities to make a difference within the local community. As the sixth largest city in BC, we are home to more than 150,000 residents. Our diverse municipality is a great place to work as it continues to grow through innovative urban design, inspiring arts, culture and recreation programs, and state-of-the-art transportation systems. We envision a bright future in Coquitlam that we hope includes you!

The City of Coquitlam is pleased to have two temporary full-time opportunities available, with potential terms between 12 and 24 months, for a talented lawyer to join a workplace that offers a flexible work-life balance. As the result of exciting life events for individuals on our team, we are in search of two stellar new individuals to help us take on exciting work in the role of Staff Lawyer for the City of Coquitlam. In this position, you can look forward to working alongside a complete legal team, including a third Staff Lawyer, two Paralegals and a Legal Assistant, all of whom report up to the Assistant City Solicitor and are led by the City Solicitor.

Our team of lawyers play a unique and often unconventional role here at the City. Looking for an opportunity to apply your legal and business skills to a broad range of impactful, community-based legal issues? This may just be the role you are looking for as we offer regular hours, passionate and diverse clients and a chance to contribute to the great programs and services provided by the City. In the role of Staff Lawyer on our team you can look forward to a variety of work, including supporting our transit oriented development application team; providing advice as a business partner to City departments; drafting and reviewing agreements and bylaws; assessing and offering resolutions for claims; and a wide range of other types of support to your peers and the senior leadership team.

This is a rare opportunity to work in your field of expertise away from the often cliché corporate office life. As the successful applicant, you will be well-versed and knowledgeable in at least one of the following practice areas: real estate, municipal law, commercial law, procurement, construction and civil litigation. Familiarity with land use planning processes and development-related legal issues is particularly desirable.

The successful candidate will be a team player who is passionate about supporting the local community, will bring a minimum of 3 years work experience as a lawyer and will be a member in good standing of the Law Society of British Columbia. A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD) is required. Experience working in a public sector environment will be considered an asset.
