ABOUT THE ROLE
The Regional District of Nanaimo is seeking a Permanent Full-time Equipment Operator in the Solid Waste Services department at the Regional Landfill.
The successful candidates will contribute to the effective operation of the Regional Landfill through the skilled operation of machinery to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the site according to RDN policies and procedures. Specific duties include: the operation of machinery to compact and cover garbage according to the detailed fill plan, building and grading roads on site, screening the contents of loads for restricted or prohibited waste, as well as operating a roll-off bin truck and other duties required in the operation of a busy solid waste landfill site.
QUALIFICATIONS
Qualifications include a High school diploma plus Heavy Equipment Operator Trades Program Certificate, and 2 years prior job-related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Knowledge of landfill and transfer station operations will be considered an asset. Applicants must possess a valid Class 3 BC Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement, standard first aid course, working knowledge of WHMIS, knowledge of safe work procedures and be in good physical condition to perform the duties of the job. Good judgement with manual dexterity skills is also required.
POSITION DETAILS
This is a permanent full-time (40 Hours per week) Union Position. The (2020) rate of pay is $29.66 to $31.22 per hour. The position offers an attractive benefits package as provided within the collective agreement between the Regional District of Nanaimo and the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 401.
SKILLS/EDUCATION

- 2 years prior job-related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
- Valid Class 3 BC Driver’s Licence with Air Brake Endorsement
