Established in 1992, the Gwich’in Tribal Council (GTC) is an Indigenous organization that represents Gwich’in Participants from the Mackenzie-Delta region of the Northwest Territories. Its vision is to be a culturally vibrant and independent Nation that is environmentally responsible and socially and economically self-reliant. Its mission is to protect and advance Gwich'in interests through hard work, collaborative approaches and good governance in order to improve the lives of its residents while preserving the language and culture of the Gwich'in.
Based in Inuvik, Northwest Territories, the Chief Operating Officer role reports to the Deputy Grand Chief and is a member of the Senior Leadership Team. The COO is responsible for providing strategic, organizational, and administrative leadership to the day-to-day operations of the GTC’s Early Childhood & Language, Culture & Heritage, Health & Wellness, and Education & Training departments. These departments run a broad range of programs benefitting Gwich’in Participants that are well funded and require more disciplined oversight and management in a complex, multi-stakeholder environment.
As the ideal candidate, you are a university graduate with a track record of providing leadership to the provision of social, community, health and/or cultural programs in a complex public sector, Indigenous or other related organization. Able to manage multiple priorities and resources effectively in a complex environment, you will be highly organized and capable of monitoring managers’ activities and holding them accountable for delivering high quality programs. Experience working with an Indigenous Nation or organization will be highly valued. You will be a practical, ethical, genuine, and respectful leader and possess experience working directly with a Board, external partners, and government officials. You must also enjoy building and working in a respectful and welcoming team environment.
