Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, the Commissioner defines and protects the vision of the town’s community in the areas of planning, building, development, and enforcement. The Commissioner delivers corporate strategies and long-term plans for the Commission that guide the development of land in accordance with the Livable Oakville Plan. The Commissioner inspires and motivates staff, encouraging ongoing employee development and encouraging a culture of continuous improvement. The Commissioner attends and presents at council meetings, public meetings and events, tribunals, hearings, and inquests. Managing sensitive and controversial issues with media, ratepayers, and the community is a key aspect of the role. The Commissioner fosters collaborative relationships with all stakeholders and encourages the community to be active and engaged in the municipality’s growth and development.

The ideal candidate is a registered planner with at least ten years of progressively responsible senior management experience in relevant portfolios. You have led large teams, ideally within a unionized environment, and have developed and administered complex operating and capital budgets. You are known for your ability to forge productive relationships and are persuasive and skilled at negotiating agreements with multiple parties. You are politically astute, having worked at the highest levels of your organization and directly with elected officials. You pride yourself in providing excellent customer service and forging consensus on high-profile initiatives that have a lasting impact on communities.
