As a trusted and respected advisor, this role requires strategic thinking and pro-active risk evaluation. The Town Solicitor is responsible for understanding the Town’s strategy, business objectives, and priorities to effectively communicate and advise on risks and legal issues for informed decision-making at all levels of the organization. The ability to collaborate and build strong working relationships with key stakeholders throughout the organization and community, is critical for success in this position.
This is the perfect job for a demonstrated leader with a collaborative work style. The Town Solicitor provides expert in-house legal counsel to the Town of Canmore on a wide range of legal, administrative and regulatory proceedings such as; interpretation of the Municipal Government Act (MGA), by-law and policy composition, contracts and agreements, planning and development, real estate, employment law, assessment and taxation, procurement, bylaw enforcement and litigation.
Prepare legal opinions, policies and reports for strategic decision making
Represent Town of Canmore in courts of law and/or supervise special counsel as required
Negotiate and prepare legal documents for property transactions
Draft and negotiate commercial agreements and contracts
Review developer agreements and reference plans
Assist in drafting, preparing and amending Bylaws
Provide advice on employment law matters such as: employment contracts, collective bargaining, terminations, health & safety
Lead towns enterprise risk management framework
Attend and advise at legislated board meetings and commissions
A Juris Doctor Degree (J.D.) or a Bachelor of Laws Degree ( LL.B) from a recognized university
Membership in good standing in the Law Society of Alberta
Minimum of 5-10 years progressive experience as a practicing lawyer, providing legal expertise to multi-faceted organizations, preferably in a municipal or government setting
Demonstrated understanding of municipal law, including (MGA) Municipal Government Act and drafting municipal bylaws with enforceability
Prosecution experience in a provincial courtroom
