As the Town’s first Fire Prevention Officer, you will ensure the safety of lives and property throughout the Town of Canmore, by developing and implementing the Town’s Community Risk Reduction Program. 

Position Overview:  This is the perfect job for someone who strives to make meaningful and direct impacts in the community through the use of their natural organization and problem-skills to inspire and motivate action for a safer and more secure community. Reporting to the Fire Chief or designate, the Fire Prevention Officer (FPO) is responsible for the design, implementation and supervision of a Community Risk Reduction (CRR) program, which addresses the current priorities of Canmore Fire Rescue regarding fire and life safety. Key priorities of this plan will include; detailing a fire prevention program or policy, development of fire prevention SOGs and department training, initiating and completing the fire inspection cycle, and creating staff resource plans for fire inspections and public education activities.

Attributes:  The best person for this position will have values and a working style that align with those of the Town of Canmore and Canmore Fire Rescue Services. You must have a genuine interest and some previous experience with; Fire Prevention program development, as well as public and departmental education. You must have a minimum of 10 years’ experience working in fire and/or emergency response service, along with 5 years’ experience as either a fire inspector, educator, or investigator. In addition, the following qualifications are required for the successful candidate of this position: Safety Codes Council Group B Level 2 Inspector, Safety Codes Council Group C Level 2 Investigator, NFPA 1001 Firefighting Level 1 or 2, NFPA 1521 Incident Safety Officer, NFPA 1021 Fire Service Officer Level 1 or 2, ICS 300 or 400, and valid Alberta Class 3 or higher Driver’s License with Q (air brake) endorsement. The FPO adheres to recognized ethical and professional standards while following Town of Canmore, provincial and federal applicable standards and/or legislation. This position will require membership in good standing with IAFF Local 4705.
