Assistant Fire Chief

We are looking for an Assistant Fire Chief to join the City’s Fire Management team. You will report to the Fire Chief and will have a number of responsibilities in areas such as operations management; oversight of training and/or mechanical sections; administration; safety, health and wellness; equipment and facilities (including operations logistical support for fleet planning and maintenance); emergency preparedness, attendance management and return to work programs; business software applications such as Telestaff, FDM and Target Solutions, Suppression recruitment, budgeting and event planning. You will also represent the Fire Department in various meetings/committees/forums; interpret and apply departmental and City policies and collective agreement provisions and prepare related departmental policies and guidelines.
You have a post-secondary education in Business Administration and/or Fire Officer Certificate, together with a minimum of 10 years suppression related experience, which should include progressive supervisory and leadership experience within a career fire department or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Your proven experience should include directing effective strategic fire ground activities using the department’s Incident Command System, including the ability to analyze and control an emergency incident requiring multiple company operations. Experience in a construction and/or mechanical environment will be an added advantage. You will provide leadership and support that encourages a team building environment, within a unionized environment. Your collaborative approach will also include establishing and maintaining good external relationships. Knowledge of federal, provincial and municipal codes, acts, regulations and bylaws relative to the Fire Department would be an asset. You should have a good working knowledge of computer and information systems within a fire service environment, together with a valid Class 5 BC driver’s license.
Flexible working hours will be required and will include either a five day or four day work week, depending on operational requirements. You will be required to be on-call on a rotational basis and be subject to the living boundary requirements for Chief Officers in accordance with the “Fire Department Regulation Bylaw, 1982, No. 5437, Amendment Bylaw 2013, No. 8291 (Living Boundaries)”.
