Level 3 Water Treatment and Level 1 Distribution Operator

The North Salt Spring Waterworks District (NSSWD)is located on beautiful Salt Spring Island, BC. Salt Spring Island is a vibrant arts community located in the Salish Sea just off the south eastern shores of spectacular Vancouver Island. With a population of approximately 10,500 people, the community has an inviting small-town atmosphere yet is only a short ferry ride away from the amenities of a major urban center. Residents enjoy excellent community and recreational opportunities, including year-round fun for outdoor enthusiasts.

The NSSWD is currently seeking a permanent full-time EOCP Level 3 Water Treatment Operator to join the NSSWD operations team. The NSSWD provides water to approximately 5,500 island residents from two lake sources: St. Mary Lake and Maxwell Lake. The NSSWD recently completed a Class 4 dissolved air floatation water treatment plant at the St. Mary source and has a Class 4 water distribution system comprised of approximately 47 kilometers of water main, 628 cubic meters of distribution storage along with multiple pump and pressure regulating stations. The NSSWD also operates six other small water systems on Salt Spring Island under contract.

Reporting to the Waterworks Supervisor, this position is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the NSSWD’s water treatment plant and distribution systems, in accordance with District policies, bylaws and legislation. The incumbent will be part of a team performing operational and maintenance duties necessary to maintain treated water quality that meets or exceeds all compliance criteria outlined in the Canadian Drinking Water Guidelines.

Applicants must possess a Water Treatment Level 3, and Water Distribution Level 1 Certification from Environmental Operators Certification Program (EOCP). A minimum of six years previous experience in water treatment is required. Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System training (WHMIS), Confined Space Certification, and Transportation of Dangerous Goods Certification are required. The incumbent must also possess a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License.

This is a permanent full-time position (40 hours per week) with a competitive rate of pay to be determined based on qualifications of the candidate selected. In addition, NSSWD provides an extended health and benefits package. This position requires being on-call and weekend work on a rotating basis.
