Due to an impending retirement, the City of Coquitlam is currently seeking a Director of Strategic and Capital Projects. As part of the senior leadership team reporting directly to the General Manager, the successful individual will lead a division that is responsible for the delivery of capital construction projects including civic facilities, recreation centres and parks, as well as the management of external partnership projects. This position is in charge of preparing master plans, facilitating third party agreements, grants, and development applications in order to execute ventures that are of strategic importance to the City. The Director of Strategic and Capital Projects will oversee large-scale projects to ensure that they are delivered on time and on budget. The successful incumbent will be called on to prepare and administer the operating and capital budgets for this division, as well as monitoring expenditures and results. This role will also provide guidance and leadership to a team of direct reports.
The successful candidate will possess a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field, along with a P. Eng. Designation. You bring 7 to 10 years of experience as a leader, preferably within a municipal or regional government setting, or an equivalent combination of experience and training. A Project Management Professional (PMP) credential is beneficial as well as registration in an accredited organization such as APEGBC and ASTTBC.
Other Requirements include:
- Excellent oral and written communication skills necessary to deliver reports and effective presentations before Council and executive level staff.
- The ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with internal clients, members of the community, and other stakeholders.
- Exceptional leadership abilities with a collaborative approach towards building relationships and a culture of respect and accountability, complemented with a successful history and in depth knowledge of best practices in managing similar operations.
- Excellent negotiation and conflict resolution skills with the ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with internal clients, members of the community, and other external agencies.
