Mandate
The mandate of the Protective Services Department is to seek compliance and promote, facilitate, and enforce provision of Municipal and Provincial bylaws with an application of fairness and consistency.

Mission Statement
The mission of the Protective Services Department is to uphold the bylaws of the municipality by working in the amicable partnership with the public and other agencies for the purpose of preserving the peace and good of the community through education, compliance, and unbiased application of the law.

Customer Service

  • Promotes a positive, professional image of the Town of Hinton in all interactions and strive to achieve the highest level of customer service
  • Seek to become truly connected in the community, by developing relationships and rapport with visitors
  • Responds in a positive, professional, and timely manner to inquiries, complaints, or suggestions and follow-up as required
  • Defer issues to the appropriate person/department/agency for resolution if needed


Job Knowledge

  • Acting as an ambassador of the Town of Hinton
  • Aligned activities within council priorities
  • Enforce Municipal Bylaws and Provincial Statues as they appear on the individual appointments
  • Proactively patrol the Town of Hinton
  • Investigate complaints and take appropriate action to resolve each situation
  • Assist other Town departments
  • Complete daily reports and data entry into report exec system
  • Be expected to work on-call shifts during evenings, weekends and on a rotational basis


Teamwork

  • Participate in team meetings
  • Work in collaboration with other Town of Hinton departments to understand and meet the client’s needs and expectations
  • Willingly takes on a variety of duties as assigned, which may not be part of the regular day-to-day expectations

  • Behave in alignment with the Town of Hinton values and workplace policies
  • Demonstrates a willingness and commitment to learning over time for improved service delivery and organizational efficiency


Safety

  • Ensure that Safety is the #1 priority of the department
  • Understand and carries out the supervisor responsibilities as outlined in the Town of Hinton Health & Safety Directive
  • Works in a manner that is safe for everyone and reports hazards


Emergencies
As declared by the Director of Disaster Services in coordination with the RCMP, emergencies will take precedence.  All other responsibilities will then become secondary in such cases.

Education & Certifications

  • A High School Diploma or equivalency (e.g. G.E.D) – Required
  • Ability to obtain Security Clearance, Criminal Record Check, Vulnerable Sector Check, and Drivers Abstract – Required
  • Hold a Level 1 or ability to be appointed as a Level 1 Community Peace Officer as per the Peace Officer Act of Alberta – Preferred
  • Have or the ability to obtain a valid PARE test with a time of no less than 4:45 min - Required
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License – Required
  • Current enrollment or completion of a post-secondary education in a related field – An Asset


Abilities and Experience

  • Ability to work as a team player with minimum of supervision and excellent time management skills
  • Dispute resolution skills
  • Skills in investigations
  • Courtroom Procedure experience
  • Previous training and experience as a firefighter or ability to obtain and maintain the same.
  • Ability to qualify as and respond as a member of the Hinton paid-on-call fire department.
  • Intermediate skills with MS office, Report Exec and database entry
  • Physically able to conduct long duration bike and foot patrols
  • Knowledge of Municipal Bylaws, Provincial Statutes, and legal system
  • Ability to interpret Legislation and Municipal Bylaws
