Deputy Fire Chief – Training and Operations


The City of Pitt Meadows is seeking a highly organized team player to help ensure the day-to-day operational and administrative excellence of the department. Under the direction of the Fire Chief this position is responsible for providing leadership, supervision and direction of all Paid on Call and career department staff. As a key component of this position will be the ability to oversee and deliver training to department members, it is expected that candidates will be proficient and certified in multiple training disciplines and able to research, recommend and develop training content. The incumbent will be a key player in maintaining operational performance standards and ensuring compliance with relevant government and industry standards and legislation including Operational Guidelines, WorkSafe, city policies and collective agreements, and in maintaining current knowledge of industry best practices.

This position also plays a key role within the department to ensure that the direction of Council, the CAO and the Fire Chief is followed. We are looking for an individual with excellent communication skills, who is able to form effective working relationships with a wide variety of internal and external contacts, and possesses exemplary leadership and collaborative skills as they take on rotational responsibilities within various divisional areas within the department and participate on committees and task forces outside the department.

The successful candidate must be prepared to work flexible and/or extended hours, often under adverse conditions, including acting as a rotational on-call duty officer and delivering training outside of business hours.

Required Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university in business management, fire administration or public safety or other related field, plus post-secondary education related to trades and/or emergency management.
  • Minimum of 5 to 7 years of progressive experience in a broad variety of fire and rescue service roles including a minimum of 3 years at a supervisory level.
  • Satisfactory completion of NFPA 1001, NFPA 1021, NFPA 1031, NFPA 1033, NFPA 1041, NFPA 472 Operations Level, Incident Command 300, Fire Service Instructor II, and First Responder License from EMA Licensing Branch.
  • Must have and maintain a safe BC Class 5 Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement, or better.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
