The North Vancouver City Fire Department has an exciting opportunity for a Regular Full-time Fire Inspector to work in the Fire Prevention Division.
Reporting to the Captain - Fire Prevention, you will participate in a program of regular inspections of all types of public and private buildings and structures to ensure compliance with fire prevention regulations; conduct or participate in training and educational workshops or presentations on fire prevention and carry out unscheduled inspections in response to complaints. In addition, you will assist in investigating fires to determine cause and origin, at times outside of normal hours of work due to emergency callouts.
You will possess knowledge of building construction, electrical and sprinkler systems; fire prevention inspection, fire investigation and enforcement methods and other by-laws, codes, regulations, and acts governing fire prevention. Experience in fire prevention, fire suppression or building inspections, as well as technical courses related to the work, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience is required. Preference will be given to those with completion of: Fire Prevention Inspector Certificate from the Justice Institute (or equivalent), BC Fire Code, BC Building Code: Part 3, Fire Investigator 1 and Life Safety Educator 1, and other courses relating to fire protection. We are also willing to consider candidates with experience in the trades or a related safety field.
Excellent interpersonal skills are necessary to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts. You should also be community-minded, positive and energetic. Strong written communication skills and a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office are required, together with a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License.
If not currently employed within the Suppression, Prevention, Training or Mechanical Divisions of the North Vancouver City Fire Department, you will be required to: provide proof of no criminal convictions relating to the job of Fire Inspector and be medically fit for the position of Fire Inspector. There is a living boundaries requirement in terms of the Living Boundaries Bylaw 8291.
The monthly salary range is as follows (IAFF Local 296 January 2019 rates):
First 6 months: $5,768
Second 6 months: $6,180
Second year: $6,592
Third year: $7,416
Fourth year: $8,240
Eleventh year: $8,487
Fifteenth year: $8,734
Hours of Work:
The Fire Prevention office currently works a compressed four day week work schedule. Irregular evening and weekend work may be required.
