Main Purpose and Function
Engineering Services contributes to the overall City purpose by providing many services and public works facilities. These ranges from such fundamental services as water supply, sewerage, drainage, refuse removal, street access, and lighting, to regulatory functions such as traffic control, parking enforcement, transportation planning, and preservation of utility and communication corridors.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Sanitation Operations Workers Spare Collections Driver are typically assigned to Collections. The Collections Operation provides direct customer service to our residents and involves curbside collection of garbage or green bin materials on assigned collection routes throughout the City. Operations Workers may also be assigned to other Sanitation Branch specific work.

The regular work schedule for this position is Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Successful applicants’ availability must meet Branch expectations in order to continue employment with the Branch.
Functional and or physical assessment related to the bona fide position requirements may be required.


Education and Experience:
  • Up to completion of high school and some laboring and truck driving experience.

Driver’s License and Record Checks
  • Satisfactory attendance over the last 3 years
  • A current and valid Class 3 BC Driver’s License with Air Endorsement or higher and a Satisfactory National Safety Code driving record are required.
    • 5 years accumulation of no more than 9 points, not in excess of 3 points per single year
    • Satisfactory driving record at work
  • The license must not include any restrictions that would affect the ability to legally and safely carry out job responsibilities.
  • Your driving record will be reviewed as part of the application process. Candidates must demonstrate a safe driving history, as assessed by the City of Vancouver.
  • Candidates must attach the following to be considered:
    • Commercial Driving Records Abstract (N Print) for the past 5 years (no more than 14 days prior to this posting)
    • Insurance & Claims History for the past 3 years

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Previous garbage, green bin or recycling collections experience is highly desired.
  • Thorough knowledge of the rules of safe operation and of the precautions to avoid accidents in operating a large truck and a demonstrated ability to work safely on the job.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude to ensure that equipment is operating properly, and mechanical issues are reported appropriately.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills to sufficiently perform the posted duties.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn the requirements of the job in a reasonable amount of time.
  • Demonstrated ability to assist crew(s) with all work functions.
  • Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions which may be accompanied by sketches and diagrams
  • Demonstrated ability to respond to enquiries and complaints, and deal tactfully with the public, contractors and co-workers.
  • Agility, muscular coordination and sufficient strength to permit the performance of heavy manual labour.
  • Demonstrated work habits over the last three years.
