Building Inspector - 2 Positions

Encompassing an unparalleled geographic region in the heart of British Columbia, the Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) offers the best of both worlds. Urban life within vibrant communities and outlying rural regions that showcase the region's beauty - pristine but rugged mountains, rolling grasslands, lush evergreen forests and both historic and modern areas, all within approximately 45,000 square kilometres. Headquartered in the City of Kamloops, the TNRD provides a wide range of local government services to a population of 130,000 located within its 11 diverse municipalities and 10 electoral areas.  

The Role:
Reporting to the Chief Building Inspector, the Building Inspector is charged with reviewing, assessing and enforcing compliance with building bylaws, codes, statutes and regulations pertaining to building safety and regulatory standards of the BC Building Code. The primary responsibility of the permanent position is in the field conducting inspections. Both positions will be responsible for plan review and permit issuance, ensuring excellent service within the TNRD and seven of our member municipalities.

Our Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate will have or be actively working towards BOABC certification with applicable experience and or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Preference for the permanent position will be given to candidates who hold BOABC Level 2 or 3. Level 1 applicants will be considered for the temporary position.  

You will have sound knowledge of:
  • Residential construction plans for compliance with regulations and permit issues
  • Non-compliant construction and determining appropriate action
  • Inspection reports to ensure full completion 
  • BC Building Code and Plumbing Code

The rate of pay is based upon level of BOABC certification and experience:  
Building Inspector I $2,227.16 – $2,576.45 biweekly  
Building Inspector II $2,344.46 – $2,715.92 biweekly  
Building Inspector III $2,461.73 – $2,855.35 biweekly

The position requires frequent contact with building professionals, public and staff to request information, explain deficiencies, and provide general and technical information on building regulations. Utilizing excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and outstanding customer service skills, you shall demonstrate a considerable degree of professional judgment when evaluating conformity with codes and regulations and interacting with the customers. You have a valid Class 5 BC driver’s license, with a good driving record.

The position is subject to the provisions of the Collective Agreement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 900.
