Temporary Full Time – 6 months, 40 hours per week

The City of White Rock is a unique, ocean-side community of 20,000 citizens known for its sunny weather, expansive beach, historic pier, delightful restaurants, and sense of community. The City is located half an hour south of Vancouver on the shore of Semiahmoo Bay.

The Engineering & Operations Department, Parks Division, seeks an individual with outstanding work ethic and a safety first attitude to join their team. The Gardener is responsible for the planning, cultivation, planting, pruning and maintenance of flowers, plants, shrubs, trees, lawns and related ornamental, recreational and boulevard areas. The ideal candidate will be organized, creative, innovative and will have a team-orientated leadership style, with skills capable of motivating and leading the work of one or more labourers and directing the work of contractors, as required.  

  • Completion of a two-year diploma in landscape/horticultural from a recognized post-secondary institution plus at least five years related experience, including at least one year supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Preference will be given to applicants who have completed a four-year apprentice with a Trades Qualified certificate;
  • Ability to perform skilled horticulture and landscaping duties with minimal supervision;
  • Ability to conduct inspections, assess trees relation problems, diagnose tree diseases and determine action required;
  • Ability to effectively communicate, verbal and written, and demonstrate excellent listening skills;
  • Ability to deal tactfully with the public in a courteous, professional and effective manner;
  • Ability to work cooperatively and amicably in a team environment with a safety first attitude;
  • Ability to maintain accurate records related to the portfolio of work;
  • Considerable knowledge of methods, practices, material, tools and equipment used in horticulture and Landscaping. 
  • Considerable knowledge of the names of species of a wide variety of plants, shrubs, trees and flowers and of the preparation and application of fertilizers and spray; 
  • Knowledge of the physical layout of White Rock considered an asset;
  • Possess and maintain a valid Class 5 BC driver’s license.  

The hourly wage of this unionized position is $34.68 hourly (2019 rates) with comprehensive benefits offered.
