The Library is seeking a strategic and creative leader to join its management team. Reporting to the Director, Library Experience, the Manager, Circulation Services is responsible for circulation services at VPL, including system-wide planning, development, implementation and evaluation of circulation policy, procedures and customer service practices. A major component of this position is leadership, direction and management of the Central Library Circulation Department, and in cooperation with other Managers, ensuring efficient and effective delivery of library service at the Central Library.
In collaboration with community members, patrons, staff and colleagues, the Manager will champion and demonstrate the Library’s commitment to community-led library service when developing services and programs. In addition to the operational functions of the role, including workforce planning and labour relations activities, the Manager will have the opportunity to contribute to the development and advancement of system wide initiatives and goals and take on special projects. Finally, as an ambassador of public library service in Vancouver, the Manager will build strong relationships inside the organization with other service units, with the City of Vancouver and with external stakeholders.
The Manager, Circulation Services position requires outstanding collaboration and communication skills, thorough knowledge of current trends and industry best practices, collegial decision-making and interest-based problem solving skills, flexibility and the ability to manage multiple and competing priorities. The Manager will lead change and foster innovative practices within the work place.
A Master’s Degree in Library and Information Sciences from an ALA accredited library school or a bachelor’s degree in a related field and significant recent relevant experience, including at least three years in supervisory and management positions, are required. Experience and training in retail, service design or customer experience management, along with sound related experience in a public service setting are assets. The successful candidate will have excellent leadership and project management skills, and a demonstrated ability to develop positive working relationships and to thrive in a cooperative environment. The successful applicant will have a proven record of achieving strategic outcomes in a timely manner, a demonstrated level of professionalism and confidentiality with strong ethics, and a strong commitment to public and customer service.
Vancouver Public Library offers a competitive and comprehensive salary and benefits package. This position is excluded from the bargaining unit.
Note: This is a temporary full-time position from December 10, 2018 to December 31, 2019.
