Protective Services Manager/ Fire Chief

Reporting to the CAO, the Protective Services Manager/Fire Chief is responsible for the general and financial management, direction, leadership and operations of the fire department, emergency management and by‐law services. Through planning, implementation and evaluation of programs and services for this department, this position is responsible for life safety, harm prevention and property protection programs for the City of Dawson. The Manager will coordinate the development and implementation of training strategies and plans that enhance the capacity of staff and volunteers to fulfill their responsibilities in a safe, capable and professional manner. As a member of the management team, this position will work collaboratively to implement the strategic goals set by Council and build and maintain relationships to grow the capacity of staff and volunteers.

  • NFPA compliant certification Fire Officer NFPA 1021 Level 2 (suppression and instruction)
  • NFPA compliant certification in investigation & inspection (NFAP 1031 level1) Pumper Operator (NFPA 1002) Technical Rescue
  • (NFPA 1006), Hazmat (NFPA472)
  • Public Education & Risk Mitigation Experience
  • ICS 200
  • Post‐Secondary Degree in Business or Public Administration, or related field
  • 3 years management experience (municipal environment desirable) and a minimum of 6 years’ experience in a Fire Officer role
  • Class 3 driver’s license with Air Brake endorsement;
  • Equivalent combination of relevant experience and education will be considered

  • Knowledge of protective services techniques and methods.
  • Emergency Scene Management Skills and knowledge of emergency management systems
  • Leadership, analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Effective conflict resolution and written and oral communication
  • Budget, time and project management experience.
  • Proactive, consensus building, results oriented management style.
