The Coordinator for the BC FireSmart Committee provides a variety of administrative, analytical, research, and program operations support to the BC FireSmart Committee and Local Government Program Services.

  1. Provides coordination for the BC FireSmart Committee (BCFSC)
    • Acts as a point of contact for theBCFSC.
    • Organizes committee meetings (room booking, catering, travel,etc.)
    • Compiles agendas, meeting minutes and action items
    • Assists with planning and logistics for BCFSC-sponsored workshops, events and courses
    • Undertakes research and analysis, gathers information, and prepares reports and/or recommendations related to the BCFSC workplan.
    • Prepares or contributes to the preparation of a variety of documents (e.g. reports, correspondence, communications, etc.)
    • Supports BCFSC website and social media
    • Performs other related duties to support the BCFSC
  2. Provides program administration services for Local Government Program Services:
    • Receives, tracks, validates and records program applications
    • Coordinates communications with clients/stakeholders
    • Provides information/records management services
    • Compiles outcome information and prepares reports
  3. Contributes to the design, implementation, operation and evaluation of Local Government Program Services programs.
  4. Conducts or supports consultations and information exchanges with a variety of stakeholders.
  5. Conducts assignments, including research and analysis related to program- and policy-related options; gathers information (e.g. develops surveys to obtain information from clients/stakeholders) and prepares reports and/or recommendations.
  6. Contributes to policy development processes and/or develops policy proposals and/or recommendations.
  7. Develops and maintains effective working relationships with a network of internal/external contacts including funders, program participants and others.
  8. Contributes to the planning, operation and follow-up to the annual convention and other events.
  9. Provides progress reports and alerts the Manager to potentially sensitive or critical issues.
  10. Contributes to the enhancement of the positive corporate culture within UBCM, and the reputation of UBCM with its members and wide network of contacts.
  11. Prepares or contributes to the preparation of a variety of documents (e.g. reports, correspondence, communications, etc.)
  12. Performs other related duties.

Job Requirements:

  • Degree in political science, public administration, business administration, or similar discipline and at least 1 year of recent (within the last 3 years), related experience.*
  • At least 5 years of recent (within the last 6 years) directly related experience.*

*Recent, related, experience:
  • Must have relevant experience, in the federal, provincial or local government:
    • Coordinating and/or supporting multi-agency committees
    • Supporting program operations
    • Assisting with policy/program research and analysis
    • Engaging with stakeholders
    • Contributing to briefing materials, reports and presentations
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearance as a condition of employment

Knowledge of:
  • UBCM’s mandate and priorities
  • Research and analytical methods
  • Stakeholder consultation and engagement frameworks
  • Standard office software including a knowledge of Microsoft Excel
  • Business English
  • An understanding of wildfire issues and FireSmart principles would also be beneficial

Skills and Abilities:
  • Written and oral communication skills and attention to detail when communicating
  • Organizational skills and able to manage multiple priorities and consistently produce results within timelines and quality requirements
  • Analytical, research and problem solving skills
  • Able to develop and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, clients (including elected officials) and members of the public while upholding the highest standards of tact, discretion and professionalism
  • Spreadsheet and database skills, and ability to use other standard office
