Reporting to the Assistant Fire Chief of Communications, the Relief Communications Operator will fill a variety of full and relief shifts in the CRD Fire Dispatch Centre. This position has a limited set schedule and will cover the annual leave, training and sick leave of the other operators. Other shifts are on call as scheduled by Management.  Work is conducted in a 24-hour emergency E911 operation.   

This position is comprised of responsible skilled technical work involving the receipt and recording of enhanced 911 emergency calls, general complaints and requests for assistance from the public. It also involves the dispatch of fire units to deal with those complaints in accordance with Communications Centre Operational Policies and Procedures, conforming to all directives and instructions. The minimum requirements will be based on NFPA guidelines 1061 and 1221 operator qualifications.

You will have previous dispatch experience, and experience using FDM CAD and FDM RMS. You will have the proven ability to work effectively in a team environment, be reliable and flexible, have knowledge of Fire Department and Emergency Service Function, as well as possess sufficient knowledge to differentiate between fire prevention, fire suppression, support services and specialty skills within the Fire Service. You will have experience operating a busy switchboard, have taken Public Safety Courses and Fire Service and Communications Courses, and be familiar with the geographical area, landmarks, major buildings, and hazards of (Malahat South) Vancouver Island and Southern Gulf Islands.

Salary for this relief position is $30.81 per hour plus 15% in lieu of benefits, as regulated by the IAFF Local 2848 Collective Bargaining Agreement. Shifts are 12 hours, 0600hrs to 1800hrs and 1800hrs to 0600hrs.  Relief shifts are a minimum of 2hrs to a maximum of 12hrs.  Relief positions have a limited set schedule and must be flexible.
