The City of Medicine Hat Environmental Utilities Department prides itself in the efficient delivery of safe and reliable municipal water, wastewater and solid waste services. In our self-funded, progressive utility a challenging growth opportunity exists for a Water & Sewer Heavy Equipment Operator to be part of a growing team of professionals.  Our successful candidate will install, operate, maintain and repair the City’s Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection infrastructure by locating, diagnosing and repairing system faults while acting as a mentor with junior operators.  

To succeed in this position, you will bring solid oral and written communication skills along with a strong commitment to serve our residents. Our successful candidate will be driven to provide high-quality service to internal and external clients, with the ambition and capability to trouble shoot problems, and make sound decisions using personal judgment capabilities.  Previous experience with Occupational Health & Safety Regulations and Standards along with City of Medicine Hat policies is beneficial.  Flexibility to work within a team environment under demanding physical requirements and with varying extreme weather conditions is expected.  Working evenings, performing call-outs, and weekend work (as needed) may be required.   

Required Qualifications:
  • Possession of an unrestricted Alberta Environmental Protection Water Distribution Level 2 Certification and Wastewater Collection Level 2 Certification.
  • Successful completion of Grade 12 or high school equivalency diploma.
  • Minimum of four years’ work experience in the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of water distribution and wastewater collection systems.
  • Ability to operate up to Class 4 heavy equipment.
  • Possession of a valid Class 3 Alberta motor vehicle operator’s license with air endorsement and satisfactory driving record.
  • Possession of a valid Standard First Aid certificate and a current Defensive Driving course.

This position has been identified as Safety Sensitive and requires the completion of a satisfactory pre-employment drug screen.
