Reporting to the Director, this manager position oversees daily accounts payable and payroll, ensuring compliance and consistency. This position is also responsible for managing the tax return preparation service for membership and may provide some tax planning advice. As designated accounting professional, the incumbent has a strong grasp of advanced accounting knowledge and skills and performs a variety of advanced general and year end accounting duties.

Typical Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Oversees and manages the day to day operations of accounts payable function for Squamish Nation and several related entities.  
  • Oversees and manages payroll.  
  • Oversees and manages Squamish Nation distribution.  
  • Oversees and manages Squamish Nation Income Assistance.  
  • Prepare tax returns. 
  • Performs advanced and year-end accounting duties. 
  • Performs general accounting duties. 
  • Oversees effective communication and working relationship between HR and payroll. 
  • Provides ongoing member service. 
  • Acts as assistant to Director of Finance. 
  • Manages staff. 
  • Supervises the Health and Safety of Employees and adheres to workplace health & safety policies, safe work practices and procedures.  
  • Participates as member of the Accounting Services and Finance teams.

Education, Level of Experience & Hiring Requirements:
  • Must be a current Chartered Professional Accountant in good standing.
  • Must have a Payroll Compliance Practitioner certification or have relevant/related payroll and compliance training/courses. May be willing to consider enrollment in, or eligible to be enrolled for certification as Payroll Compliance Practitioner or Certified Payroll Manager, and must complete within a set timeline.
  • Plus 7 years of directly-related experience in the majority of duties listed in this job description including staff supervision, A/P, A/R, payroll, general accounting skills, knowledge of tax returns, basic tax, on-reserve finances, etc.
  • As career progresses, incumbent will be required to successfully complete job-required, short-term upgrading, training and courses relating to staff supervision, A/P, A/R, payroll, general accounting skills, knowledge of tax returns, basic tax, income earned on-reserve and tracking of numbers on spreadsheets.
  • Previous experience working in a First Nations Community (particularly Squamish) is an asset.
  • Experience as an advanced level user MS Office, the internet, etc.
  • Working experience with a large scale computerized database system. Experience with JD Edwards is an asset.
  • Must have a valid BC Driver’s License Class 4 or 5, Class 7N may be considered.
  • Must have a reliable vehicle and current auto insurance.
  • Must be able to travel as required.
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends as required.
  • Must successfully complete Criminal Records Check as per Squamish Nation Policy.
  • May be willing to consider candidate registered in CPA Professional Education Program near completion, and must be completed within a set timeframe.
