The Engineering and Public Works Department plans, designs, constructs, operates and maintains the core service systems that supply water for drinking and firefighting, collects and disposes of sanitary sewage and drainage, manages the solid waste collection contract, as well as providing multi-modal transportation facilities, including roads, bridges, walkways, street lighting and traffic signal systems. The Department also maintains the corporate fleet that includes passenger vehicles, trucks, construction equipment, and small operating equipment.
Reporting to the Manager, Operations, the next Water Superintendent will be responsible for overseeing the operation, maintenance, and repair of the City’s rapidly growing Level IV Water Distribution system consisting of 13 pump stations, 8 reservoirs, numerous PRV and SCADA monitored sites, and 500 kilometers of water mains. The Water Superintendent leads, manages and mentors a staff of 29 who are involved in all aspects of water distribution and environmental protection.
The Water Superintendent is responsible for protecting the health, safety and economic well-being of water consumers in Coquitlam through the management and operation of the Water Utility. The work is technical, supervisory and administrative in nature. The incumbent directs and leads the operation, monitoring, evaluation, maintenance, repair, and quality control activities of the water utility, which provides fire protection and safe drinking water to over 150,000 persons.
The successful candidate will have over five years of progressively responsible experience with a strong understanding of the distribution and treatment for potable water and wastewater. They will have excellent management and problem-solving skills with the ability to develop the effective working relationships required to optimize resources and support City priorities.
Additionally, the successful candidate will have the EOCP Certification-Water Distribution Level 4 (Level 2 or 3 may be considered depending on previous experience) and eligibility for certification as an AScT or CTech from ASTTBC. The successful candidate will have relevant post-secondary experience and possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia.
