About the Opportunity
The City of Iqaluit has an exciting opportunity for a Superintendent – Water & Sewer Operations to join their team in Iqaluit, Nunavut.
Reporting to the Director of Public Works & Engineering, you will be responsible for leading the two Divisions of the Public Works Department that fall under the Water & Sewer Operations, specifically Trucked Water & Sewer Services and Utilidor Operations (i.e. Water and Wastewater Treatment, Piped Distribution and Collection).
The successful candidate will perform a variety of complex supervisory, administrative and professional tasks in planning, organizing, directing and supervising these divisions. You will also possess strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
More specifically, you will be required to develop project plans, purchase supplies, allocate resources, estimate and monitor job costs, assist subordinates in resolving work and performance related issues, and liaise with other City of Iqaluit departments, developers, contractors, utility companies, and both Federal and Territorial agencies in the coordination of projects. Considerable independent judgment and action are expected to be exercised in performing the work.
To qualify for this role you must have a post-secondary diploma in Distribution Systems Technology” and/or “Water/Wastewater Treatment Systems Technology” or equivalent, and possess a CET designation or an equivalent combination of education and experience, combined with a minimum of 5 years’ experience specializing in water and wastewater treatment process mechanical equipment. A Bachelor’s degree in Chemical/Mechanical/Civil Engineering and current registration as a Professional Engineer with APEGBC or eligibility to obtain is preferred.
To be successful in this role you will need to possess knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in maintaining and servicing water distribution systems, wastewater collections systems, water and wastewater treatment systems, pumping and lift stations, trucked water delivery and trucked sewage pickup systems, and associated service and maintenance activities. You will also possess a thorough understanding of management theory and administration that will enable you to provide the required level of professional support and to offer meaningful analysis of policies and programs.
You will have the ability to think critically, using logic and reasoning to understand, analyze, and evaluate complex situation and research information to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to the situation, as well as the ability to establish and implement effective administrative programs and procedures and plan and organize daily work routines.
Finally, the ideal candidate for this role will possess the ability to employ economic analysis and reporting of data and communicate complex ideas and proposals effectively so others will understand to include preparation of reports, agendas, and policies.
