This is technical and clerical work checking building plans for adherence to Provincial building code and City by-law requirements. Core responsibilities involve examining plans for proposed construction related to single- and two-family dwellings for compliance with the City and Provincial building and zoning regulations and by-laws. Duties include listing non-conforming items of submitted plans and discussing them with principals involved; preparing and issuing building permits, maintaining records and/or file permit applications, plans and permits; and answering counter and telephone enquiries concerning building and zoning regulations. The Plan Checker 1 provides information to inspectors and other City employees related to buildings under construction. The position performs related and special departmental work as required.

Qualifications include completion of the BCIT Building Technology Diploma and some experience related to construction; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Working experience as a municipal Plan Checker is preferred. The successful applicant will have knowledge of municipal building and zoning by-laws and provincial building code-related regulations; of the standard practices and materials employed in building construction; of the preparation and use of building plans and specifications; and the ability to interpret building construction plans rapidly and accurately; to manage a heavy workload and to thrive in a fast-paced and stressful environment; and the ability to deal tactfully and effectively with contractors, designers, architects/engineers and the general public. BOABC Level 1 Certificate and Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia are required.
