North Salt Spring Waterworks District

Environmental Technologist

The North Salt Spring Waterworks District (NSSWD) is presently seeking a full-time staff member to join our team as an Environmental Technologist.

Located in the beautiful Southern Gulf Islands, Salt Spring Island, voted the Number One Art Town in Canada, is a vibrant, active, rural community and a great place to live. Surrounded by the Salish Sea, our year-round climate is mild, featuring sunny Mediterranean-type summers, and somewhat damp, but warm winters. Schools are excellent, and for the outdoor enthusiast we have fishing, kayaking, sailing, hiking, soccer, tennis, squash and year-round golf, with winter sports a short drive away on Vancouver Island or on the mainland.

The NSSWD serves a population of approximately 6,000 with drinking water supplied by two lake sources, each with its own treatment and distribution systems. In addition, the NSSWD operates six other small water systems under contract.

The NSSWD believes in taking a source-to-tap approach to drinking water protection and provision and, accordingly, owns and manages the protected Maxwell Lake watershed and two secondary watersheds from which streams are diverted to refill the lake each year. The NSSWD also conducts water quality and quantity monitoring at both lake sources and monitors the treated drinking water throughout the distributions systems for a wide range of parameters including bacteria, algae and algal toxins, metals, and disinfection by-products.

A new dissolved air floatation water treatment plant is nearing completion for the St. Mary Lake supply, and the District anticipates building another new treatment plant for the Maxwell Lake supply.

The Environmental Technologist will be assisting the Environmental Manager with a range of both office and field work.  Duties of the Environmental Technologist are varied and include:
  • Coordinating and scheduling the water quality sampling program
  • Assisting with collection and transport of water samples from lakes, streams, treatment facilities and water distribution systems
  • Liasing with staff at external laboratories
  • Maintaining the water quality database and various spreadsheets
  • Analysing and reporting on water quality and quantity data
  • Maintaining field and laboratory equipment as necessary
  • Assists with preparation of annual water audit, annual water quality report, and other documents as necessary

We offer a competitive salary and benefits package and are looking for someone with a positive, team-oriented attitude who is willing to learn and grow with us. Applicants must have completed a diploma in Water Quality, Water Treatment or Environmental Technology or a degree in a relevant science such as biology or environmental science.
